Board 90: Yellow Brick Road

This week's picture features a lonely tin man making his way through the countryside along a yellow brick road towards a distant Emerald City. Just where Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion are is anyone's guess.

Level 1 (Clear 25 red pegs from 94 total - Pro target 400k)

A mass of individual round pegs covering the grassy areas. This level looks awkward to make catches, particularly because of the central void.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 525,860
  • This turned out to be easier than it looked. Although catches are tricky to judge, it's quite easy to pick up early points with big ricochets by just dropping balls into the top of the pattern and have them rattle all the way down. 400k seemed quite an easy pro target.

Level 2 (Clear 35 red pegs from 74 total - Pro target 425k)

I guess this design is supposed to represent the road itself, but it looks more like a tyreprint to me. Only 74 pegs in total, though, which is a pretty low number.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 445,440
  • With such a high proportion of red pegs, I had hoped for more distance bonuses, but I did get a couple of Red Crush bonuses instead. A comfortable pro score in the end.

Level 3 (Clear 35 red pegs from 81 total - Pro target 550k)

I think this design represents the tin man's axe blade. Plenty of curves, and a couple of teleports. I suspect there could be a potentially big score here if a ball could be made to slide down the outside of the axe, through the teleport and then down the inner and bottom curves.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 440,660
  • I couldn't find the perfect ball, and the points didn't come as easily as I hoped they might. The red peg went off a ricochet that I wasn't expecting when I still had a couple of balls in hand. However, I think it's unlikely I would have been able to keep going long enough to reach the pro score as the indications up to that point were not good.

Level 4 (Clear 25 red pegs from 94 total - Pro target 450k)

This design follows some of the lines in the picture - the trees, the side of the road, etc. It's tricky to judge how these levels are going to play, but there are still less than 100 pegs which is a good thing.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 484,290
  • I was struggling a bit there until I got an extra boost from a late ball. It took out two of the three remaining pegs, got me to within touching distance of the pro score, earned an extra ball and then finished in the bucket.

Level 5 (Clear 30 red pegs from 108 total - Pro target 450k)

This design is a repeating pattern of crossed bricks. Lots of horizontal and vertical pegs and plenty of big gaps is usually conducive to making lots of catches. We shall see.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 524,290
  • I didn't feel that I did very well here. I could have scored much more and made more catches. It wasn't a problem though as I still made the pro target without too much trouble.

Level 6 (Clear 45 red pegs from 94 total - Pro target 550k)

The same design as level 1. A lot more red pegs this time, but no less balls, and even the pro target is not massively higher. It ought to be a doddle with a laser ball, but it should be possible without it.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 469,230
  • I needed lots of catches, or lots of red pegs with each ball, and I got neither. I wasted the last ball by missing completely. Despite all this, I only had four red pegs left at the end, and was only 80k short of the pro target, so it shouldn't take too many attempts.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 566,600
  • A little bit more luck, and some slightly better catching made the difference there. I needed to avoid the 10k bucket at the end and fortunately dropped in the 50k one.

Level 7 (Clear 45 red pegs from 94 total - Pro target 625k)

The same design as level 4. A lot more red pegs again, and a significant increase in the pro target, but it's worth a try without power ups first.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 555,910
  • Really close. I had two pegs left at the end, one red one blue, and still needed about 70k for pro. I took the purple peg off the side wall for what should have been an easy catch, but I mistimed it and only got the jaw. If I'd made the catch I would have had the choice of going for a straightforward deflection into the 100k bucket, or taking the red off the side wall for a guaranteed pro score. But it was not to be.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 381,220
  • Not particularly close that time. Still six red pegs left at the end, I think. Only making three cacthes was the problem. Plus all the ricochets seemed to seek out the blue pegs and avoid the red ones, or maybe it just seemed that way.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 646,260
  • Another really close one. I actually had the pro score that time. I just needed to make a catch of the penultimate red peg, but just caught the rim again. That's two really close attempts out of three. If I end up getting held up for ages on this level now, or have to use a power up, I'll be furious with myself!

Attempt #4 - No power ups. Score: 704,520
  • Just one red peg left again, and well over the pro target. I can't believe I haven't got this one yet!

Attempt #5 - No power ups. Score: 446,290
  • That one didn't go very well. The catches didn't work, and nor did the ricochets.

Attempt #6 - No power ups. Score: 961,640
  • Finally got there, and in some style. I got a total clearance with a maximum 200k final bucket bonus for good measure.

Level 8 (Clear ALL pegs - 25 red and 49 blue - Pro target 650k)

The same design as level 2. This one requires a total clearance, but I've not used a power up yet, and it would be rather special to be able to go through an entire board without needing any, so I'll try without to start with.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 750,260
  • I thought I had no chance there, when I got down to my last ball and still had ten pegs left to clear. But I picked them off one at a time and kept making catches, although one of them bounced off the rim of the bucket twice before dropping into it! That has to be one of my best under-pressure finishes to date.

Level 9 (Clear 45 red pegs from 108 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 625k)

The same design as level 5. There are a lot of pegs here condensed into quite a small area and breaking through to the lower ones can be quite tricky. I suspect a laser ball or a grenade might make pretty short work of this level, but I've come this far without using any power ups so it seems a shame to start now.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 499,350
  • Six red pegs left at the end, all at the bottom of the lowest two clusters. Only 15 shots, though, so I could have made a few more catches. Not bad for a first attempt and too early to turn to boosts just yet.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 592,330
  • Again, not enough catches made early on. I strung a few together at the end, but it was a lost cause by then. There were still 9 red pegs left at the end. I shall still persevere without power ups for a bit as it's definitely possible with a certain amount of luck. It's all about taking out the red pegs. If I can do that then the points will probably come anyway.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 420,470
  • I got quite a few catches there, but I wasn't taking out enough pegs with each ball. I need a couple of early shots that can do some proper damage. Otherwise I just can't keep the catches going for long enough.

Attempt #4 - No power ups. Score: 386,500
  • I think I'm getting further away from this. I was a long way from clearing the red pegs there. I'm not ready to give up just yet, but I can see me turning to the laser ball eventually. Shame.

Attempt #5 - No power ups. Score: 306,800
  • A long way away again. I'm just not getting any penetration into the design.

Attempt #6 - No power ups. Score: 406,300
  • I cleared the left hand side, but the right hand side was hardly touched. I think I'm going to have to admit defeat and use a laser ball.

Attempt #7 - No power ups. Score: 461,580
  • 10 red pegs left. I really need to give up this idea now, and use a laser ball.

Attempt #8 - No power ups. Score: 658,730
  • 10 red pegs left again. This really isn't working. This can be done, but I'd need a vast amount of luck because I'd need to make a massive number of catches.

Attempt #9 - Laser Ball. Score: 1,262,070
  • Well I finally succumbed and added a laser ball, and as I suspected, it then became stupidly easy. I got a total clearance with four balls to spare and doubled the pro target. Now I'm wondering if I gave up too easily.

Level 10 (Clear ALL pegs - 35 red and 46 blue - Pro target 850k)

The same design as level 3, but all pegs are needed. The pro target looks pretty high, so this could be tough without power ups but I'll give it a few goes that way first.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 491,560
  • Seven pegs left at the end, all blue, but quite a long way from the pro target. It might be worth shooting straight into one of the teleports with the first shot.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 860,700
  • Somehow I managed to get pro score here without using any power ups, and on only my second attempt. Looking back at it, though, I suspect I could try another twenty or thirty times without doing it again. I had to grab every possible opportunity to earn a bonus, and even then I needed the full 200k final bonus to get it by just 10k. Shooting straight into a teleport seemed to work well as an opening gambit. Plus I picked up a few other slide bonuses and lucky catches, not to mention quite a few catches that I made that I went for but wouldn't necessarily have expected to get.

Level 3 (Clear 35 red pegs from 81 total - Pro target 550k)

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 384,950
  • The teleports kept getting in the way that time. It seemed like every time I lined up a catch, the ball would disappear through the teleport and miss the bucket.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 216,490
  • A dreadful failure. I made one catch, I think. Nothing worked at all.

Attempt #4 - No power ups. Score: 588,190
  • Got it at the fourth attempt, although only just. I needed the 50k final bucket that I got. That completes the Ace for me on this week's board with just that one annoying power up used on level 9. It would have been nice to get through without using any, but I'm quite pleased at having just used the one. It's pretty unusual just getting through a level 10 without any power ups, and only the second time I've done it since starting my blog.

Board 63: Tomb of Secrets

This picture is of the inside of an Egyptian tomb. There is sand on the floor and the way ahead is flanked by two huge statues of Set.

Level 1 (Clear 25 red pegs from 97 total - Pro target 525k)

I'm not sure what this design represents. Perhaps it is the setting sun as viewed beteen two pairs of sand dunes. 525k seems a reasonably high target for this level as I doubt it will be easy to get a ball to run down those slopes without flying off.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 440,860
  • I had the balls in hand to finish, but I had to try and build my score up first. So I was taking chances that I wouldn't normally have taken and it didn't work out.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 425,420
  • These pegs are very awkwardly positioned. They're all getting in the way of each other so I'm finding it almost impossible to pick up any catches. I made just one in that game. Despite this, I wasn't far off though, so I'll give it another go without any power ups. It is only level 1 after all.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 570,660
  • I needed a bit of luck to get the pro score this time. The score was looking a little on the low side until I picked up a few useful bonuses towards the end.

Level 2 (Clear 25 red pegs from 111 total - Pro target 450k)

A design of an eye such as might be seen in a heiroglyphic. The pegs are quite bunched in the centre of the screen, which might make breaking through to pegs at the bottom quite tricky.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 237,500
  • A lack of catches did for me here. Only 1 catch made, so only 77% clearance and barely half the points required for pro.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 486,240
  • I found catches very hard to come by again, but I managed to get some good ricochets going to earn some extra points. It was touch and go at the end and I had to gamble on avoiding the 10k bucket. Luckily, I hit the 50k bucket so all was well.

Level 3 (Clear 25 red pegs from 99 total - Pro target 475k)

This design features a pair of diagonal lines that follow the shaft of sunlight in the picture. Around them are lots of individual round pegs arranged in neat lines.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 501,450
  • That seems quite a tough level and I had to ride my luck quite a lot towards the end to beat it first time. Those diagonal lines form an awkward barrier to get through, and all those loose round pegs give what I call a bagatelle effect, where the position the ball comes out at the bottom bears very little relation to where it entered at the top. I had to try and take the last red off a deflection, and fortunately it worked.

Level 4 (Clear 30 red pegs from 89 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 425k)

This design consists mainly of straight lines that follow some of the straight lines in the picture.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 309,740
  • Another level where catches are hard. I started to get some right at the end, but I was on my last ball by then and I couldn't quite keep it going.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 627,150
  • Catches do get a lot easier as the screen empties, so it's one of those levels where can easily find yourself trying to eke out the last couple of balls for as long as possible. I had one or two lucky catches here, but by and large I felt I played it pretty well.

Level 5 (Clear 25 red pegs from 118 total - Pro target 475k)

Another rather curious design featuring a vertical line down each side, some curved lines sloping down towards the centre, and a arrowhead shape of individual round pegs in the middle.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 458,480
  • Very close for a first attempt. Just one red peg left at the end.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 527,480
  • This wasn't too difficult in the end. Once the awkward overhanging 'tree branches' are out of the way, catches off the remainder are fairly straightforward, so the endgame can be extended for quite a few shots. Forgot to start the recorder though, so no video.

Level 6 (Clear 40 red pegs from 99 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 675k)

The same design as level 3, which I remember as being quite awkward, despite the fact that I did it first go. The diagonal lines tend to push the balls to the left making the balls low to the right quite tricky to get to.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 447,720
  • Still three red pegs left at the end. I could have done with more catches, but they're not easy get on this level.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 323,680
  • Six reds left that time, I think. It's a tricky design to negotiate so I think I'll add a laser ball.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 192,340
  • Truly awful. It took way too long to break through to the yellow peg. I only made one catch in the game and still had a dozen red pegs left at the end.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 330,940
  • Four pegs left at the end. I'm not getting much of a boost from the laser ball as the pegs are too spread out. I might try a Big Bounce.

Attempt #5 - Big Bounce. Score: 387,740
  • Only two pegs left there, one red and one blue, but still nowhere near the pro target. Maybe both power ups are required.

Attempt #6 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 257,110
  • Another truly awful attempt. Both trigger pegs were awkward to get to. Catches just wouldn't come. It wasn't happening at all there.

Attempt #7 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 719,690
  • That worked much better. The yellow peg was nicely on top so I could trigger it straight away. The laser picked up the extra rim bounce to take out some extra low pegs, the Big Bounce worked well, and I took quite a few lucky catches. Despite all this I was still struggling to make the pro target at the end. I had to make a total clearance, getting as many purple pegs as possible, and quite a few of them off the side wall first, and even then needed at least 60k from the final bonus buckets. I'm quite glad to get that one out of the way, for a level 6 it's quite tough.

Level 7 (Score 500k with 35 red pegs and 62 blue - Pro target 700k)

The same design as level 1 which was quite tricky. I struggled to make the 525k required for that one, and this one needs 700k so I'll jump straight in with the laser.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 891,310
  • I got quite a few lucky catches at the start here, which meant I always had plenty of lives in hand later on. It took the pressure off, allowing me to take on quite a few riskier shots later on and I cruised to a comfortable pro score.

Level 8 (Clear ALL pegs - 25 red and 86 blue - Pro target 575k)

The same design as level 2. Catches were quite tricky on the design before. I'll certainly need a laser ball.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 613,910
  • I should have had this one. I took too many chances at the end to earn extra points when I already had enough for the pro target anyway. Then I ran out of balls with two pegs left. Silly.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 636,180
  • Four pegs left that time, but I had to hang on for quite a while to get that close.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 562,040
  • Just one peg left. I just needed to make one more catch at the end and missed it by a whisker. The closest attempt yet, but still it resists.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 715,540
  • Got it on the fourth attempt. And it only took 20 shots. I got lots of good ricochets. I thought I'd completely messed up the laser ball when I shot it too late, but instead of getting one good bounce, I got two half-decent rim bounces, so it didn't work out too bad.

Level 9 (Clear ALL pegs - 35 red and 54 blue - Pro target 625k)

The same design as level 4. I shall start with the laser again, but one of the problems with this layout is the lack of easily available pegs with the first ball, so the trigger peg will probably be awkward to get to.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 516,970
  • Got the total clearance, but I needed the full 200k final bonus and I only got 60k. It took an age to break through to the yellow peg, so I was quite surprised I managed to get the clearance at all.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 520,800
  • Again, the yellow peg took way too long to get to. I got a couple of lucky bonus-filled balls in the middle which put me back in the hunt, but I just had too much to do towards the end and I ran out of balls with five pegs left.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 922,160
  • Got the yellow peg fairly quickly and made quite a few catches to keep a steady accumulation of points going without losing too many balls. I managed to get a classic 3 peg finish, though, which is always satisfying.

Level 10 (Clear ALL pegs - 25 red and 93 blue - Pro target 725k)

The same design as level 5, so quite a few pegs to be cleared. Even with a laser ball this one could be tricky.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 913,160
  • Quite a few lucky catches in this one. Two or three that hit the bucket rim only to bounce up and be caught anyway. Satisfying to get it at the first attempt.

Board 89: Conch Cottage

A picture of a little cottage, standing alone on a remote beach. The cottage appears to made out of a giant conch shell.

Level 1 (Clear 25 red pegs from 108 total - Pro target 525k)

This design features four spirals and a scattering of loose round pegs. It's very similar to level 1 of Rainbow's End, although the lower two spirals are the other way up. The first two balls are obvious. After that I'll have to see what's left.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 674,520
  • That was a nice easy starter. Two big sweeps to start, then lots of opportunities for Exact Angle bonuses. I didn't make many catches, but then I didn't need to. It was all over in 10 shots.

Level 2 (Clear 25 red pegs from 88 total - Pro target 450k)

A couple of starfish-like designs, plus a bunch of loose pegs.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 294,320
  • I started promisingly enough, but I only made four catches and that wasn't enough.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 554,300
  • I wasn't sure if I was going to make enough points for Pro. When I got down to the last red, I considered trying to rebound the ball straight into the 100k bucket, but the angle didn't look quite right. So I took a chance and took the purple peg off the side wall to catch it on the other side of the screen, and it worked. The remaining two blue pegs were both fairly well placed for catches, so I took them as well for the total clearance.

Level 3 (Clear 30 red pegs from 110 total - Pro target 500k)

This design looks a bit like an amoeba, but I assume it's meant to be an overhead view of a small island. There are lots of curves here so there may be some sweeping bonuses to be had.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 504,750
  • Got this one first go. There were indeed quite a few sweeps to be had. Several Exact Angles. I got down to the last red peg and calculated that I had 30k to go to the pro target, but I still had two balls in hand. So I could take knowing that I would get the target even if I fell in the 10k bonus, which I did. Forgot to start the recorder though, so no video.

It took me two more attempts much later to get another pro score for the video. I got 638,610 for a comfortable victory.

Level 4 (Clear 35 red pegs from 90 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 500k)

The main feature of this design is the curve that follows the opening of the shell, plus another couple of smaller curves on either side. Otherwise all the pegs are individual. Only 90 pegs in total, though, so it might not be too tricky.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 267,680
  • One of those goes where absolutely nothing worked. I estimated where the bucket was most likely going to need to be for the catch, and the ball always went a different way. Zero catches made, so nowhere near clearing the reds or reaching the pro target.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 388,130
  • A better effort, certainly. But still over 100k short of the target, and three red pegs remaining.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 680,960
  • No problems at all that time. I completed it easily with points to spare and balls in hand. I made fairly steady progress all the way through, but it was touch and go up until the thirteenth ball. That ball took out 4 of the remaining 7 red pegs, earned an extra ball and landed in the bucket for another, scoring 80k of the required 95k. After that it was just a matter of going through the motions.

Level 5 (Clear 25 red pegs from 114 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 450k)

This design represents the pointy outline of the shell as it spirals inwards. Lots of interesting curves here, but they point in all directions.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 557,210
  • Another level that seemed on the easy side. They're normally starting to get a bit tougher by the time you hit level 5.

Level 6 (Clear 35 red pegs from 88 total, with only 8 balls - Pro target 575k)

The same design as level 2. None of these designs seemed particularly tricky, so I'll start without power ups and see how I progress.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 211,900
  • Not enough early catches. I was down to about two or three balls before I knew it. I stretched it out a bit at the end, but it was too little too late.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 228,800
  • No, I think this is going to need a laser ball. I'm struggling to get enough catches to keep going long enough to take out all the red pegs, or come close to the pro target.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 425,740
  • An almost complete lack of catches, plus an under-performing laser ball, did for me there. I can, and should, do much better than that.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 718,350
  • Only 15 shots made, but I could have finished much earlier than I did. I picked a much better line for the laser ball this time, plus it caught two extra rim bounces for a whopping 434k. It meant I could happily ignore the score after the second ball and concentrate on taking out the red pegs. Once I had more balls left than red pegs, I started going for the clearance, but I abandoned it when I got low on balls.

Level 7 (Score 450k with 35 red pegs and 75 blue, with only 8 balls - Pro target 750k)

The same design as level 3. I'll try it without power ups first, but I suspect it will need them to get the pro score.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 371,750
  • Only made 4 catches which is why the score was so low. I'll add a laser ball and see what difference that makes.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 639,020
  • Not far off the pro target really. I had three pegs left at the end, having only narrowly missed the last catch. I'll move one and come back to this one.

Level 8 (Clear ALL pegs - 25 red and 83 blue, with only 9 balls - Pro target 650k)

The same design as level 1, which was quite easy. A complete clearance is required, though, so I'll use a laser ball.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 630,840
  • 92% clearance, so a bit more work required. No problem with the score though.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 708,170
  • 94% clearance, so a little better, but that still means five or six pegs left at the end. I'm not entirely sure that the laser ball is the best power up to use here. You have to use the first two balls on the top two spirals to have any chance of the clearance, but that doesn't leave much to aim the laser at. Having said that, I didn't catch either of these two balls, or the laser ball that came after, and those three balls might have made all the difference.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 633,890
  • Up to 97% clearance, so I'm still improving. I've yet to work out the timing on the first two shots to catch them, though. Once I can catch them reliably I'll have a bit more breathing space.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 650,860
  • 94% again. I still can't catch those first two balls. How can it be that hard?

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball. Score: 876,490
  • Got it on my fifth attempt, although I don't think I caught either of the first two balls in any of the five attempts. This time I even had a big bucket and still missed them both! I did get an extra rim bounce with the laser ball this time, although it only took out an extra three pegs. I just got that little extra bit of luck this time. A lucky catch or two, and two or three balls that ricoched around a bit in the endgame to take out some extra pegs.

Level 9 (Score 525k with 30 red pegs and 84 blue, with only 8 balls - Pro target 700k)

The same design as level 5. I'll use a laser ball here as the pro target is quite high. The main target could probably be reached without any power ups quite easily, but pro scores are the objective.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 544,050
  • The yellow peg was completely hidden at the very end of the spiral and I didn't end up hitting it until my ninth ball, by which time it was of little help. An early laser could probably pay enormous dividends on this level.

Level 10 (Clear ALL pegs - 30 red and 60 blue, with only 8 balls - Pro target 675k)

The same design as level 4, but all pegs are needed. Level 4 took me three attempts, but when I did it, I reached this target with 3 balls to spare and only 4 pegs left. And that was without power ups, so I think I'll try this one without first.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 359,160
  • Only 90% clearance so maybe trying without a power up was a little ambitious. I didn't get much luck there though, so it may be worth another go.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 486,420
  • Three pegs left. The yellow peg didn't look that hard to get to, but it still took three or four balls to get to it, so that will have cost me a bit in terms of both points and pegs. If I can get the yellow peg on the first ball, then I'll have a much better chance.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 301,790
  • A dreadful effort. The catches just didn't happen. I made three, but all early on.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 776,170
  • I got a bit more luck that time. I didn't make that many more catches, but several of the balls during the middle section ricoched around a bit more and took out more pegs. The tenth ball was the key shot. It took out seven of the remaining 11 pegs, earned an extra ball, and finished in the bucket, earning over 75k in the process.

Level 7 (Score 450k with 35 red pegs and 75 blue, with only 8 balls - Pro target 750k)

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 889,930
  • Despite not triggering the laser until my fifth ball, when my score was already up to 327k, I still managed to find a good path for it so that it doubled my score up to 670k. That left me 7 balls to score 80k which I did with several balls to spare.

Level 9 (Score 525k with 30 red pegs and 84 blue, with only 8 balls - Pro target 700k)

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 651,640
  • Closer than the last time, but still not quite there. I could have triggered the laser with the first ball, but I chose not to. In retrospect, that may have been a mistake. I probably could have scored more with the laser ball if I'd worked out a better path for it.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 837,960
  • I picked up some useful bonuses at the right time. I did get very lucky towards the end. I missed everything with my last ball when I still had about 90k to go, and I got to play it again.

Board 64: Rainbow's End

A picture of a pot of gold sat on a stone circle in a wood. Presumably there's a rainbow finishing here, but we can't see it in the picture.

Level 1 (Clear 30 red pegs from 111 total - Pro target 650k)

This design features four spirals and a scattering of loose round pegs. The top two spirals look very tempting as they're both aligned with the firing positioned. Unfortunately, taking the top two will break up the bottom two, but I can't see any obvious way of taking the bottom two first.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 690,590
  • I sent the first two balls round the top two spirals, although there may be an angle that takes the bottom two first without breaking the top two, but I didn't bother looking for it. Then it was just a matter of picking off the remaining reds, grabbing bonuses as they presented themselves.

Level 2 (Clear 30 red pegs from 106 total - Pro target 450k)

This design follows the curves of the picture. These curves don't look easy to shoot though. If a ball could be made to roll gently over the top one, then the two smaller, lower ones might be sweepable.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 530,150
  • I found this one quite easy. I had a few lucky catches, but there were plenty of bonuses to be had. I managed to leave a red peg til last that I could shoot into the 100k bucket from. That allowed me to finish with about four balls left.

Level 3 (Clear 25 red pegs from 117 total - Pro target 550k)

I have no idea what this design represents, but it features a pair of concentric circles, plus a couple more half-pairs, and five U-shapes at the bottom.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 367,540
  • The pegs all got in each other's way here. I should have thought more about breaking a hole in the centre circles that I could use for a big sweep shot. I still had 2 or 3 red pegs left at the end.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 177,220
  • I tried to find a route into the big central circle, but couldn't get ti to work. As a result I lost focus on everything else and failed to pick up many bonuses or catches.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 511,510
  • I went for the final red peg too early. I managed to build my score to within 50k of the target but then took the final peg hoping to avoid the 10k bins, but didn't. I did manage to find a good first ball, though, which opened a useful hole in the central circles. I expanded it slightly with the second shot and then swept the entire outer circle for a score of just under 130k. So I'll have another go and see if I can repeat it.

Attempt #4 - No power ups. Score: 462,650
  • One red peg left. I managed to repeat the first ball though. It involves aiming at the loose peg to the very top right, just fractionally above full on.

Attempt #5 - No power ups. Score: 481,930
  • I got down to the final red peg, but I was still over 200k short of the pro target. I tried to build my score, but there were so many blue pegs still left that safe catches were hard to find, and I only had a couple of balls left. I ended up taking out the last red peg before I was ready.

Attempt #6 - No power ups. Score: 177,700
  • I messed up the first ball that time. I shot at completely the wrong peg by mistake. I was always struggling after that, particularly for points.

Attempt #7 - No power ups. Score: 481,290
  • I'm still not getting enough points, despite getting the sweep around the big circle. I guess I'll have to add a laser ball.

Attempt #8 - Laser Ball. Score: 756,260
  • Started the same way as usual, breaking a hole in the central circle then getting a big sweep from it. Then I triggered the laser ball and got a load more points from that. Pretty easy to finish after that.

Level 4 (Clear 30 red pegs from 87 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 450k)

This one is an explosion of individual pegs, both round and diamond, radiating outwards from the pot.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 399,260
  • I only had one red peg left at the end, but I was trying to open a path to it when I missed the final catch.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 483,680
  • I had enough points but ran out of balls before I could finish clearing the last two red pegs.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 253,470
  • That one didn't go quite so well. I kept finding the routes through the pegs without hitting any. The bonuses didn't come and nor did the catches.

Attempt #4 - No power ups. Score: 230,330
  • I didn't make a single catch this time. I'm clearly getting worse. It's time to add a laser ball.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball. Score: 775,220
  • Again the laser ball makes all the difference. I was down to one red peg and had accumulated over 450k points with about 5 or 6 balls remaining. I went for the total clearance, but finished prematurely when the last red peg was hit by a stray ricochet.

Level 5 (Clear 25 red pegs from 66 total - Pro target 450k)

Two clusters of pegs and two large gold coins acting as obstructions. Most of the pegs appear to be visible, but there are about a dozen I would guess that aren't and these will be the key pegs, I imagine.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 398,570
  • I was struggling for points with two red pegs left. I actually twitched on the mouse button while I was considering my next shot and managed to take out the last two reds and drop in the 100k bonus, but it wasn't enough.

Level 6 (Score 475k with 35 red pegs and 82 blue - Pro target 850k)

The same design as level 3 which took 8 attempts. However it only took that long because I was trying to beat it without a power up. As soon as I resorted to the laser ball it was easy. I'll use the laser from the start here.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 940,340
  • I used my standard first three shots which all worked fine, although I missed the catch on the third one. I could then hit the yellow peg which was front and centre and take out another chunk of pegs and points. Then I just had to pick off what was left, taking bonuses as they presented themselves. I took an unnecessary total clearance.

Level 7 (Clear 40 red pegs from 106 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 600k)

The same design as level 2, but 10 more red pegs, 1 less ball amd another 150k on the pro target.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 630,050
  • I couldn't make my mind up at the start as to whether I was going to use the laser ball or not. I decided to go with it in the end, and I think I probably needed it. I had to make quite a lot of catches, stretching the game out to 24 balls. Quite a few of those catches came off purple pegs at the end as I tried to build my score up.

Level 8 (Clear ALL pegs - red and 111 blue, with only ball - Pro target 850k)

The same design as level 1. This was quite a friendly design, so I think I'll try without power ups first, despite the fact that total clearance is needed.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 803,100
  • I was down to two pegs and one ball, so I only needed to make one more catch or take both pegs in one ball. I hit the first peg, missed the second by a whisker, hit the rim of the bucket, the ball came across the screen, missing the the second peg by a whisker again, hit the rim of the bucket again, came halfway back again, hit the rim of the bucket a third time and rolled off. Of course, it still needed to avoid the 10k buckets at the end, but it was still extremely irritating.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 739,420
  • 96% clearance which is about 5 pegs left. I've not been far off doing this on either attempt so far, so I'm pretty confident this can be done without using a power up.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 673,360
  • Only 93% clearance this time, so not as good as the previous couple of goes. Only 14 shots, so lack of catches was the main problem.

Attempt #4 - No power ups. Score: 709,980
  • 95% clearance. I keep coming close but not quite close enough. It's starting to get annoying.

Attempt #5 - No power ups. Score: 690,240
  • 95% again. This is getting depressingly repetetive. That one went over 34 shots, but a lot of those were shot straight into the bucket while waiting for a usable purple peg. I'm not getting that little bit of extra luck that I need.

Attempt #6 - No power ups. Score: 578,480
  • 93% clearance, and 18 shots. I really don't want to resort to power ups here as I've so close several times without them. This was my worst attempt yet, but I just need a bit of luck.

Attempt #7 - No power ups. Score: 933,550
  • I got some lucky bounces early on which gave quite a lot of extra points, so it became all about making the catches, but I failed with two pegs left.

Attempt #8 - No power ups. Score: 767,560
  • 95% clearance that time. I'm going to have to give up soon, but I'm still reluctant to.

Attempt #9 - No power ups. Score: 733,230
  • 95% clearance again.

Attempt #10 - Laser Ball. Score: 967,910
  • I've just come back to this board after finishing this week's and forgot to remove the laser ball. Inevitably, after coming so close for so long, the laser ball made it pretty easy. It didn't add many points, but it wasn't really points that were the problem. What it does is take a chunk of pegs at an important time and that's what made the difference.

Level 9 (Clear 35 red pegs from 66 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 550k)

The same design as level 5 with the two large gold coins to get in the way.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 290,140
  • It's going to take me a few goes to learn the angles, I suspect. I still had quite a few red pegs left in the lower bunch. I probably ought to get rid of them first next time.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 574,390
  • I think I had a magnet in the bucket on that one. I was making catches all over the place, and if I'm honest, not many of them were particularly planned. At least, I tried to put the bucket in the right general area, but I still didn't expect as many catches to work as did. I'm not complaining, of course. It earned me a quick pro on what I think could have been a pretty tough level.

Level 10 (Clear ALL pegs - 30 red and 57 blue, with only 9 balls - Pro target 675k)

The same design as level 4 but a complete clearance is required. 87 pegs isn't a huge number for a total clearance, but they're well spread out, and that makes it more awkward.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 244,410
  • An awful effort. Only 77% clearance, so barely three-quarters of the pegs removed. The catches just didn't want to come.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 548,930
  • A much better effort, but bonuses were thin on the ground. Just under 110k for the laser ball, despite triggering it with the first ball. I needed some big final bucket bonuses and I got 2 10ks.

Level 5 (Clear 25 red pegs from 66 total - Pro target 450k)

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 569,680
  • That has to be one of my most effective laser balls ever. The yellow was awkwardly placed in the middle of the lower group, so I didn't activate it until the seventh ball. But the laser bounced twice off the lower coin and once off the bucket to take out 31 of the remaining 36 pegs including all but one of the 14 red ones, and scoring over 300k to take me comfortably past the pro target.

Level 10 (Clear ALL pegs - 30 red and 57 blue, with only 9 balls - Pro target 675k)

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 189,200
  • The clearance was ok at 87%, but an almost complete lack of bonuses meant that the score was going nowhere. Over half the score I did get came from the laser ball, and that wasn't brilliant.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 126,500
  • Clearance of 83% this time. The score was better than last time, but still less than half of what's required. I had intended to add a Big Bounce, but I must have clicked it twice by mistake as it wasn't there when I started the game.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 452,050
  • Up to 94% clearance with the added power up. Still some way to go though.

Attempt #6 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 715,500
  • Just made it. The two power ups both worked perfectly. The laser ball triggered the Clone Ball giving me two laser balls going in different direction which is always good news and scored me about 156k. Then the Big Bounce gave me several good bounces, each taking out quite a few pegs, and that scored even more at 189k. It was still touch and go towards the end whether I would make the pro target or not. In the end, the minimum of two 10k final bonuses would have given it to me by 500 points, but I got a 10k and a 50k for a small cushion.

Board 88: Ant Hills

A picture showing a number of ant hills as seen from an ant's eye view. Although these ants and their hills are all very anthropomorphic.

Level 1 (Clear 25 red pegs from 94 total - Pro target 450k)

A mass of evenly spread diamond shaped single pegs. Catches will probably be a nightmare as the angles look impossible to read. I'll need to get some early balls to take out lots of pegs, I suspect.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 564,920
  • That was easier than I expected actually. I didn't make many catches, at least at first, but once most of the pegs had gone down the right hand side, catches were much more forthcoming, so I could pick off some easier ones before finishing of the red pegs.

Level 2 (Clear 25 red pegs from 98 total - Pro target 500k)

This design follows the curves of the various walkways around the main two ant hills.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 601,070
  • Another level that proved pretty easy. I finished it with several balls to spare.

Level 3 (Clear 25 red pegs from 103 total - Pro target 450k)

This design has curvy lines where the grass in, a couple of loops with antennae over the ants' heads, and then circular single pegs over the ant hills. There are lots of low pegs which are harder to judge rebounds off, so that could make it awkward, but again, it doesn't look too bad.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 593,710
  • Three goes, three pro scores so far on this board. If anything, they're getting easier. There's probably a real stinker to come somewhere. I probably did ride my luck a little with this one as the catches seemed to come very easily.

Level 4 (Clear 20 red pegs from 50 total - Pro target 400k)

This design is that of an ant warren with a network of tunnels that weave their way down the screen. Obstacles are always awkward, but there aren't many pegs to worry about. Indeed, only two red pegs need to be taken per ball. The pro target might be tricky though.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 261,260
  • One red peg left at the end, but quite a way short of the pro target. Only one catch made though, so that could be improved. Hopefully my score will improve as I get used to the angles.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 519,640
  • I had a better idea of the angles required this time, so I made more catches and wasted fewer balls. I got the total clearance and ended up making the pro target comfortably.

Level 5 (Clear 20 red pegs from 126 total - Pro target 400k)

This design features three fly-shaped structures, with a few clusters of individual pegs. 20 doesn't seem very many red pegs, but there are a lot of blues to get in the way.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 516,040
  • Actually not that difficult. If you can get a ball to stick between the uppermost leg of the top left ant, it will fall down through the centre of both that ant and the one below, taking out a lot of pegs and earning a big bonus. Do something similar on the third ant and most of the work is done.

Level 6 (Clear 40 red pegs from 103 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 575k)

The same design as level 3. Well I finished level 3 first time with a score that would have been good enough for pro here, so it has to be worth attempting without power ups.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 456,660
  • Still about three reds left at the end, but I could have done better.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 478,010
  • Much the same as last time. Not enough early catches puts the pressure on too early. I'm reduced to taking one peg at a time with too many left to realistically expect to keep it going all the wat to the end.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 294,950
  • Not a single catch, so not a very good effort really.

Attempt #4 - No power ups. Score: 587,050
  • Some much better catching than on previous attempts. I stretched out my 9 balls to 25 shots. Most of those came towards the end, but it was the early catches that made the differences.

Level 7 (Score 475k with 35 red pegs and 63 blue, with only 9 balls - Pro target 700k)

The same design as level 2. The pro target might be a bit of a stretch, but there's more red pegs this time so that might boost it a bit.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 612,030
  • This one went pretty well, although I daresay it could have gone better. I took 19 shots which could probably be improved upon.

Level 8 (Clear ALL pegs - 25 red and 69 blue - Pro target 700k)

The same design as level 1. I've not used a power up yet, so I shall continue and see how far I get.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 229,150
  • I can't see this pro score being reached without a power up. I was a long, long way short of it then. Bonuses are tricky to earn because the pegs are so spread out.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 327,180
  • I missed the total clearance by a single peg having missed the final catch by a whisker. Of course, I was a long way short of the pro target again. The main problem was the yellow peg being right down the bottom in the middle - the worst possible position. It took several pegs to hit it, and by the time I did, there were no clusters left to aim the laser at.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 404,110
  • 95% clearance which is about 5 pegs remaining. The yellow was in plain sight at the top this time, but I still struggled to score off it. The score was better this time but there's a long way to go.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 725,240
  • I wasn't hopeful when I saw the location of the yellow peg. It was right down the bottom, but at least it was to one side. It took a few balls to get to it, and wiped out most of the right-hand side. But I concentrated the laser ball on the left hand side and got a very helpful second bounce off it as well. I picked off most of the rest individually, concentrating on the purple peg for maximum points. I managed to leave a good last peg to drop a ball straight in the 100k bucket at the end, and it was just enough.

Level 9 (Clear 30 red pegs from 126 total, with only 8 balls - Pro target 550k)

The same design as level 5. I managed to find a good line on level 5 that took out a lot of pegs at a sweep, so I'll be looking to find that again.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 372,350
  • Only one red peg left at the end, and a fair way short of the target, but I failed to find the angles that I did last time I played this design. If I can find the shot that falls all the way down through both ants on the left hand side, there shouldn't be a problem.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 59,510
  • I only made two catches, and earned a single 25k bonus. Still looking for that perfect first ball, but that was a dreadful effort.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 555,510
  • I still couldn't find that perfect ball that I got on level 5, but as it happened, I didn't need it. It didn't look particularly hopeful at the start, but I managed to keep it going, got a bit lucky at times, and left myself with a shot into the 100k bucket off the last red peg to scrape over the line.

Level 10 (Clear ALL pegs - 20 red and 30 blue, with a 5s shot-clock - Pro target 575k)

The same design as level 4, but a total clearance is required and there is a dreaded shot clock. I did get a total clearance last time, albeit not with a score quite high enough to make this target, but I'll try it without power ups to start with.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 375,680
  • Only one peg left at the end which was proving awkward to reach. The shot clock didn't have much affect, to be honest. I tend to make my mind up pretty quickly about what shot to play next, and 5 seconds is generally enough. Accumulating enough points could well be the tricky bit, but if I can leave a central peg, then picking up the full 200k bonus is not out of the question.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 305,200
  • Four pegs left that time. Only two catches made, so a little more luck needed. Plus I need to have a few more attempts to get used to the unusual angles. This can definitely be done without power ups, so I want to persevere for a while longer like that. Plus I'm not sure how much power ups would help anyway.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 444,040
  • Two pegs left. But I wasted two balls near the end in complete misses, and the second was an identical shot to the first! My best score yet, but I would have struggled to get a decent final bonus as both pegs were together on the far right.

Attempt #4 - No power ups. Score: 305,200
  • I only had a couple of pegs left, despite using up several balls trying to find an angle to reach a lone peg on the right-hand side. The score was rubbish though.

Attempt #5 - No power ups. Score: 233,660
  • Four pegs left. Again, I got stuck with the middle peg of the five in a row on the far right, and that peg on its own is nigh on impossible to hit. So I used up a load of balls trying to find the elusive angle to hit it.

Attempt #6 - No power ups. Score: 366,510
  • Well I cleared all the pegs at least which finishes the board, but I still have this one and level 7 to reach pro on before I get the Ace. Also on the positive side, I think I've found an angle that takes out that awkward middle peg on the far right.

Level 7 (Score 475k with 35 red pegs and 63 blue, with only 9 balls - Pro target 700k)

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 395,040
  • Only four catches, which just isn't enough. Just 86% clearance. I can certainly do better than that.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 594,830
  • A better score, but otherwise not much improvement. I made a few more catches, but the clearance was only 84% that time. I'll finish it off with a laser ball.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 890,960
  • As I suspected, as soon as the laser ball is added it becomes very straightforward. I got a total clearance, with a score well in excess of the pro target, and with about 3 balls unused at the end.

Level 10 (Clear ALL pegs - 20 red and 30 blue, with a 5s shot-clock - Pro target 575k)

Attempt #7 - Big Bounce & Gravity Ball. Score: 566,470
  • I felt it was time to add a power up or two. I'm not convinced the laser ball is going to add a great deal so I've gone for the Big Bounce / Gravity Ball combination. It very nearly worked. I got the total clearance, and was less than 10k short of the target.

Attempt #8 - Big Bounce & Gravity Ball. Score: 549,500
  • Again, I got the total clearance, but again my score fell just short. I think this is the right power up combination. It's only a matter of time before I get that little bit of luck that I'm missing.

Attempt #9 - Big Bounce & Gravity Ball. Score: 671,280
  • That was the bit of luck I needed. I managed to finish the clearance with a peg in the centre, and sure enough, both balls fell into the 100k bucket. One would have been enough. Only two catches were made, but it was enough.
