Board 95: The King's Pad

The picture is of a huge frog with a crown on sitting on a lily pad. Some other, much smaller, frogs are arranged about him, one of which is in mid-leap.

Level 1 (Clear 30 red pegs from 86 total - Pro target 450k)

The first design consists mainly of short curves which follow the lines of the picture. There is one straight line and a dozen or so single round pegs, but the curves go in all directions so the angles may be awkward.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 325,300
  • I struggles to make catches on this one. Because the pegs follow the lines of the picture, they're all over the place giving lots of odd angles. The game was over in 13 shots which is not enough.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 557,390
  • The catches worked much better this time, as did some of the early ricochets. So a lot more early bonuses gave my score a boost and took some of the pressure off in the endgame.

Level 2 (Clear 25 red pegs from 98 total - Pro target 475k)

This second design has more curves, this time imitating the leaves of the plants on the bank. More single round pegs than last time, scattered around the bases of the plants.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 448,660
  • I thought about taking the last red peg and hoping for 50k or 100k final bucket, but I decided to try for one more catch off a purple peg first, and I misjudged the path of the ball.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 448,410
  • Catches were quite tricky again, although I got a few more than in my previous go. I did manage to clear the reds this time, but only by accident. I took a big deflection off a purple peg and the ball bounced across the screen to hit the final red one and dropped in the 10k bucket. Any other bucket would have got me the pro score, as it happened, but not that one.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 364,460
  • I think my mind was elsewhere during this attempt. It wasn't very good and I didn't come particularly close. I'll have one more go before I get the laser ball out.

Attempt #4 - No power ups. Score: 582,080
  • A few useful catches and unexpected bonuses helped me get to the pro target quite comfortably that time. It's taken 6 goes to beat the first two levels, but I've not used a power up yet, so I'm happy with that.

Level 3 (Clear 25 red pegs from 92 total - Pro target 425k)

This design is based on the crown on the King frog's head.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 512,060
  • I felt I got quite lucky with catches and ricochets here, so it was probably harder than it seemed. The game ran to 24 shots which was pretty good going. I had to play quite a few one peg catches in the endgame, but the early catches had left me plenty of balls in hand which took the pressure off quite a lot.

Level 4 (Clear 35 red pegs from 105 total - Pro target 525k)

This design is based round three lilypads of different sizes. Each lilypad is essentially a circle with a sector missing, a bit like a pacman.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 132,360
  • Only 2 catches made. All those curves made it look like it could be quite an easy level, but it certainly wasn't. I couldn't see a way of breaking into the circles without ruining them for sweeps. I'll have one more go, but if I don't improve, I'll go for a laser ball afterwards.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 338,830
  • Only 2 catches again. No real progress in terms of pegs cleared. Time for a laser ball.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 657,050
  • I found some much better opening shots that time. I may even have done it without the laser ball at all, but who knows. Certainly, by the time the laser ball had been activated, only the the right hand lilypad was left, the others having been all but eliminated. But by aiming it high to the right, I could take out quite a lot of this pad, and score quite a lot of points for it. It was enough points to take me past the pro threshold, so then it was just a matter of taking out all the remaining red pegs, which I duly did.

Level 5 (Clear 25 red pegs from 87 total - Pro target 400k)

This design is three sets of 29 single round pegs separated by moving logs. This must be a nod towards the classic arcade game Frogger. Negotiating those gaps will be tricky.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 230,380
  • Zero catches made and nowhere near the pro target. Only one red peg left at the end, so close on that score. This could be a tricky one.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 432,290
  • I concentrated this time on rebound bonuses, making sure I always took red and purple pegs off the walls and logs first wherever possible, and that helped boost my score a bit. I thought I was still going to be a bit light at the end, but my final ball was a shot off the top log onto the purple peg, but it then rolled across the log and found its way to the final red peg for a decent distance bonus. I only managed a 10k bonus at the end but it was enough.

Level 6 (Clear 45 red pegs from 98 total, with only 8 balls - Pro target 650k)

The same design as level 2, but with 20 more red pegs, two less balls and 175k on the pro score. I struggled for catches last time. I think I'll have one go without power ups first and see how I get on.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 396,200
  • I don't think I made a single catch there. I used 9 shots from 8 balls, but I may have earned an extra ball another way as I don't remember making any catches. I'll add a laser ball.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 674,400
  • I think I may have been too focused on maximising my score bonuses, and not given enough attention to clearing the red pegs. I made the pro target, but still had two or three red pegs left at the end.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 536,620
  • I wasted a ball trying to get to the yellow peg. I failed to get the rim bounce that I was aiming for with the laser ball, and I wasted another couple of balls right at the end trying to find the right angle off the side wall. Too many mistakes.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 760,740
  • Two red pegs left at the end. I started really well, getting both a rim bounce and a split ball with the laser which practically got me to the pro target after three balls. However every subsequent shot seemed to find a path that missed all but the first red and the bucket. Very annoying.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball. Score: 924,080
  • I got a good rim bounce with the laser ball which boosted its score enough so that I could stop worrying about the pro target and concentrate on clearing the reds. I picked up a few lucky ricochets and catches, plus after 9 attempts at this layout, I'm starting to get the hang of the timing a bit better. I had balls in had at the end so I was going for the total clearance, but I caught an unexpected angle off one of the last blue pegs which took out the last red as well.

Level 7 (Clear ALL pegs - 30 red and 56 blue, with only 8 balls - Pro target 725k)

The same design as level 1, but with 2 less balls and 275k on the pro target. Plus a total clearance is now required.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 631,930
  • I got a good rim bounce with the laser ball again, but it took several balls to trigger it. But then I struggled to make catches afterwards, so any benefit I earned from a good laser ball was then ruined.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 423,050
  • No rim bounce this time and I was always struggling after that. I think I'd better add a Big Bounce.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 459,520
  • The yellow peg was a nightmare to get to. I only had three balls left when I finally got it. After that there were just too many pegs left and not enough balls to get them with.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 558,990
  • Missed the very last catch. Of course I needed 150k from the final bucket bonuses, so I still needed a big helping of luck but it's still very annoying.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 542,270
  • I can't seem to get the rim bounce anymore which is very annoying as it can make a big difference. Only 86% clearance so not particularly close.

Attempt #6 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 961,940
  • I got good results with both the laser ball and the trampoline. I didn't even attempt the rim bounce with the laser ball this time after having missed it for the last four. I picked an alternative route that looked more lucrative and an easy catch. I nearly messed it up at the end when I forgot that it was an All Pegs level. I took the last red without caring where the ball was going, thinking it would finish the level, but of course it didn't. Luckily, I still had a couple of balls left and most of the remaining blue pegs were fairly easy catches.

Level 8 (Score 500k with 40 red pegs and 65 blue, with only 9 balls - Pro target 700k)

The same design as level 4, but with 5 more red pegs, one less ball, and 175k on the pro target. Not a big increase, really, so it shouldn't be much harder.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 864,470
  • If anything that seemed easier than level 4. I got a good score with the laser ball which put me most of the way there. I could have finished earlier than I did, but I was going for the total clearance which I missed by one peg. Not that it mattered.

Level 9 (Clear ALL pegs - 35 red and 57 blue, with only 8 balls - Pro target 700k)

The same design as level 3, but with 10 more red pegs, two less balls, 275k on the pro target, and a total clearance required. I did level 3 first time without power ups, so a laser ball here will hopefully be enough.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 592,860
  • 96% clearance. I didn't feel I'd picked a very good path for the laser ball, so that could be improved upon. Otherwise not too far away, so only a slight improvement should be enough.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 471,270
  • Only two pegs left that time, but I was further away with the score. The path for the laser ball was even worse.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 423,750
  • Nowhere near the clearance that time - only 79% clearance. A lack of catches and decent ricochets was the main cause.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 455,180
  • Only 86% clearance. I'll add another power up and see if that helps.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball & Split Ball. Score: 175,260
  • That one was a non-starter. The yellow peg was a nightmare to get to. It took me a lot of balls to break through to it. By the time I had, I'd eliminated a lot of pegs for hardly any bonuses and the game was effectively over.

Attempt #6 - Laser Ball & Split Ball. Score: 467,310
  • I've remembered why I never use the Split Ball. It's because 4 times out of 5 it doesn't seem to gain me any benefit at all. This time, after the split, one ball hit nothing, the other hit one more peg, and neither ball was caught. I'll give it one more chance.

Attempt #7 - Laser Ball & Split Ball. Score: 629,800
  • Back up to 96%, so a better attempt, and my best score yet. The split ball still wasn't brilliant, as one of the balls still disappeared almost immediately, but at least the other took out a few pegs.

Attempt #8 - Laser Ball & Split Ball. Score: 502,670
  • A better result from the Split ball, but only 92% clearance. Too many missed catches.

Attempt #9 - Laser Ball & Split Ball. Score: 747,080
  • I didn't get much from the Split ball, but at least I caught one of them. I did find a good path for the laser ball, getting the extra rim bounce which took out a bunch of low pegs. I had to hang on with the last ball for a few shots, but I got there.

Level 10 (Clear 35 red pegs from 87 total, with only 8 balls and a 5s shot-clock - Pro target 550k)

The same design as level 5, with the moving logs, but with 10 more red pegs, 2 less balls, 150k on the pro target and the dreaded shot clock. Five seconds isn't too bad, but those logs move pretty slowly so this could need some quick thinking.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball & Gravity Ball. Score: 572,960
  • Pretty close, especially for a first attempt. Only one red peg left at the end. Both trigger pegs were in the bottom level, so neither were triggered until quite late in the game. In fact, the laser ball was my very last shot. My best ball was actually when I hit the white peg which gave me a split and quite a few subsequent bonuses.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball & Gravity Ball. Score: 567,190
  • The yellow ball was down the bottom again, and the green ball was in the middle, so neither were particularly convenient. When I did eventually get to the yellow peg, I got a good result from the laser ball. I spotted an opportunity to fire it straight through both gaps to bounce off the bucket, and I managed to get it bouncing straight across the bottom layer, taking out both remaining red pegs there. I needed a bit of luck right at the end as I was still short of points when I took out the final red peg, but I managed to accumulate enough with that last ball to get me there.

Board 59: Seminary of the Clouds

This picture is of a grand pagoda sitting presumably atop a high mountain peak, as it appears to be perched on the clouds. Other craggy mountain tops can be seen poking through the clouds around it.

Level 1 (Clear 30 red pegs from 108 total - Pro target 500k)

This first design is of three pairs of curves that come together in points, like the rooftops of the pagoda. It ought to make for a few sweeping bonuses if I can get a ball to run along them.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 606,160
  • I didn't make many sweeping bonuses but I did pick up quite a few distance bonuses as I got the ball to bounce around between the various sections. In the end it was a comfortable victory with about five balls left over.

Level 2 (Clear 35 red pegs from 110 total - Pro target 450k)

This design consists entirely of individual round pegs, arranged mainly closely together in lines.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 441,690
  • I thought I had that one under control, but the last red peg was hidden. I tried to find an angle onto it with my last ball, knowing I had enough points for the pro target, but I missed it. Never mind, I'll get it next time.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 522,650
  • No problem with the score that time, but all the catches I attempted seemed to go awry. Layouts with lots of tightly packed round pegs are always a nightmare to take catches off.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 271,470
  • That one went horribly wrong. I created a gap in the centre with the first couple of balls, and thereafter every subsequent ball seemed to hit one peg then disappear through the gap. One more try before I bring out the laser ball.

Attempt #4 - No power ups. Score: 485,820
  • Well, I managed to get the Pro score on the fourth attempt without having to resort to power ups. I needed to hang to the last ball for 7 seven shots though, so lots of pressure catching was happening at the end. As it was I had to hope I avoided the 10k buckets at the end.

Level 3 (Clear 35 red pegs from 107 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 450k)

This design is mainly made up of straight diagonal lines, intersecting at diagonal pegs, plus a few single round pegs.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 466,010
  • Got this one first time thanks to a couple of big bonuses in the middle, but I forgot to start the recorder so no video. It seemed like quite an easy level though, as I didn't seem to get a great deal of luck other than the odd bonus or two, but still made the pro target.

Level 4 (Clear 30 red pegs from 91 total - Pro target 500k)

The design has one huge curve that runs from top left to bottom right. There are also several more lines of single round pegs. The round pegs could make catches awkward, but there is clearly the opportunity of a big sweeping bonus with the first ball if it can be landed right at the top of the slope.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 599,290
  • Got a reasonable sweep to start with but was fairly hit and miss after that. I had to scrabble around for points a bit in the middle, but towards the end I was concentrating on making catches as I had a lot more red pegs left than I had balls in hand.

Level 5 (Clear 25 red pegs from 83 total - Pro target 425k)

This design features half a dozen squares, four of which are interlocking, plus a few single round pegs. The total number of pegs here is low, but breaking into the left hand side might be tricky.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 194,320
  • As I suspected, breaking into the interlocking squares is nigh on impossible. But all those pegs clustered so tightly together invites the laser ball, so I'll go straight for one of those.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 297,280
  • Even with the laser ball taking out most of the left hand design on the second ball, I was still struggling to remove all the red pegs, or indeed get near the pro target. I'm going to need a good slice of luck.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 393,450
  • I can't work these angles out at all. I got the yellow peg with the first ball, then took out a good chunk with the laser ball, but I only made three catches in total and failed to clear the red pegs. I shall have to add another power up.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball & Grenade Ball. Score: 384,260
  • I could have taken the last red peg, but I wasn't confident of getting to the 100k bucket from it, which is what I would have needed. I tried to take the peg next to it first which would have cleared the way to the 100k but just missed the catch.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball & Grenade Ball. Score: 515,240
  • Got it at the fifth attempt. I think the red pegs were slightly more fortuitously arranged this time, and I picked up a few distance bonuses. I've got a feeling this could be tricky when it comes round again.

Level 6 (Clear 45 red pegs from 107 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 725k)

The same design as level 3, but 10 more red pegs and 275k more on the pro target. Unusually, the number of balls is the same.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 768,970
  • I started off well enough here, and getting a pro score wasn't a problem as there were bonus chances opportunities all over the place. Catches were awkward but not impossible, and I think it might just be a matter of getting familiar with the angles.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 517,040
  • Only two red pegs left, so closer, but catches are still a problem. I'll use a laser ball.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 452,230
  • I messed up the laser ball. I thought I'd triggered it with the first ball, but hadn't. So I shot the second ball as if it was the laser and, of course, it just took out a few pegs that would have been better off saved for the laser. I tried to keep going at the end, but I had left myself too much to do.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 536,790
  • A better effort, but still not quite there. I'll add another power up.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball & Grenade Ball. Score: 755,740
  • I was going for the total clearance, and when I missed the catch off the second last blue peg and it ricoched around to take out the last red and fall in the 10k bucket, I thought I'd blown it, but luckily I had enough balls in hand to get me over the finish line.

Level 7 (Clear 35 red pegs from 91 total, with only 8 balls - Pro target 725k)

The same design as level 4, but 5 more red pegs, 2 fewer balls and 225k more on the pro target.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 384,500
  • Getting rid of the big curve is easy enough, but all those individual round pegs are a major problem.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 678,800
  • I was going quite well there but messed up the catch off the penultimate red. The yellow peg was awkward to get to and I'm still trying to find the best angle to take out the bug curve with ball one.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 484,130
  • I found quite a good first ball for the curve, but the route for the laser could probably be improved. I struggled to make catches again.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 620,570
  • That one was pretty close. I got down to the last red peg but wasn't quite close enough to the pro target to allow to take it. A clumsy shot off the side wall which missed everything was probably my undoing. It happened in the endgame when balls were at their most valuable.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball. Score: 738,330
  • I needed a lot of catches to get this one, taking 30 shots in total, and a lot of those catches weere more than a little fortunate. But then, I was always going to need some luck to get through this one.

Level 8 (Score 500k with 40 red pegs and 68 blue, with only 9 balls - Pro target 700k)

The same design as level 1, but 10 more red pegs, one less ball and 200k on the pro target. It's purely score we're going for this time, and it doesn't look too tough.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 188,700
  • I got a dreadful first shot that bounced about destoying all the curves without actually running along any of them. After that I got very few catches, and even fewer bonuses. Not good.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 335,430
  • Better than the previous attempt, but a long way from victory, let alone pro score. I'll add a laser ball.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 689,600
  • I didn't know what to do for the best at the end there. I only needed about 15k for the pro target, but neither of the last two reds could be taken off the side wall, and all the easy catches had been taken. In the end I waited for a ages for a particular blue peg to become purple, then tried to hit it off the side wall. I missed it, hit a blue peg instead, and failed to catch the ball.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 643,180
  • Again, I ran out of balls as I was closing in on the Pro target. I didn't need to make many more catches after the one I failed on.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball. Score: 317,320
  • I took both upper curves before I triggered the laser ball and then made a mess of the laser ball itself. It left me far too much to do with the few balls I had left.

Attempt #6 - Laser Ball. Score: 910,170
  • It took six attempts, but when I got there, I did it in style! I took out the top two curves first, deliberately triggering the laser ball with the second of these. Then I played the laser ball high so it would take out the maximum number of pegs on its first pass across the screen, despite knowing that it would follow the same path coming back and wouldn't be caught. With these more awkward pegs out of the way, I could concentrate on taking lots of catches, using the purple peg when I could, and red pegs otherwise. There were a few lucky catches along the way, but I gradually worked my way through all the remaining pegs for a total clearance.

Level 9 (Clear 35 red pegs from 83 total, with only 8 balls - Pro target 550k)

The same design as level 5, but 10 more red pegs, two less balls, and 125k more on the pro target. Level 5 was hard enough as it was, so this could be a challenge.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball & Grenade Ball. Score: 662,970
  • Well, considering level 5 took 5 attempts and a total of 6 power ups, I certainly didn't expect to get this harder version first time! I got a few early lucky catches which always helps. I also found a pretty good path for the laser ball which took out a good chunk of the awkward left-hand design, and then the grenade ball took out most of what remained there. After that it was just a matter of picking off pegs one by one and building a pro score.

Level 10 (Clear ALL pegs - 25 red and 85 blue, with only 9 balls - Pro target 700k)

The same design as level 2, but 10 less red pegs, one less ball and 250k on the pro target, and, of course, all pegs are now needed for victory.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 607,210
  • Not bad for a first attempt. Just seven pegs left at the end. I started well enough, but missed a few too many catches in the endgame.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 369,420
  • Nowhere near as close this time. Truth is, I got quite lucky last time, but still couldn't finish it. I'll add a Big Bounce and see if that helps.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 569,560
  • Only two pegs left, so much closer. I got quite a lot from the Big Bounce, despite hitting it on the first ball. I thought it would get hemmed in at the bottom, but it managed to avoid that.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 730,030
  • Got it at the fourth attempt. I needed to avoid getting two 10k bonuses at the end, but anything better than that would be enough. So as soon as the first ball dropped in the 50k bucket I knew I was OK. There were few lucky catches, and oner particularly fortunate ricochet towards the end that took out most of the remaining pegs.

Board 60: Silver Isles

This picture is a number of tiny desert islands, all connected to each other by a series of purple bridges.

Level 1 (Clear 25 red pegs from 100 total - Pro target 425k)

This design is just made up of individual round pegs scattered over the sea and clouds. These designs tend to give a very hard to read 'bagatelle effect' so catches, particularly early ones can be very tricky.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 589,010
  • I made steady progress through this first level. I picked off the obvious red pegs off the side wall first, plus I got lucky with two or three of them. I deliberately attempted an angle off each of them that would hit the red peg then bounce across the screen in the hope of picking up a distance bonus, and I got two or three of them. I also picked up a few fortunate catches in the first few balls. After that I just picked up rebounds off purple pegs as and when the opportunities arose.

Level 2 (Clear 30 red pegs from 111 total - Pro target 675k)

This design is lots of curves with ovals representing the islands with more curves connecting them.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 588,450
  • The arrangement of curves tends to funnel balls into the centre where catches are hardest, so picking up early catches was tricky. Also, because the pegs go quite high up the side walls, rebound bonuses are tricky to get. As a result, I was struggling for points towards the end. I still thought I was in with a chance though as catches were getting easier. However, I caught an awkward bounce off the bucket rim and took out the last red peg before I was ready, so despite falling in the 100k bonus bucket, I was still nearly 90k short of the target.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 337,440
  • I think I made one catch there. Nothing seemed to go right at all. Awful!

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 749,680
  • I found a particularly good first ball which will be worth remembering for next time this layout comes up. It took out 35 pegs and scored over 265k. I still had to be careful after that to make sure I didn't waste too many balls, but it certainly made life a lot easier.

Level 3 (Clear 30 red pegs from 96 total - Pro target 525k)

This design has curves for the islands and the clouds, and individual round pegs for the bridges and the horizon.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 533,980
  • I struggled a bit for points to start with and ended up having to keep the last couple of balls going for quite a few shots. I took a few chances that paid off and got me to within, I thought, 25k of the target. then I took out the last red peg in the hope of avoiding the 10k buckets. Unfortunately, I had got the Pro target wrong in my head, so I was actually 125k short. As it happened, though, I picked up a 25k crucial bounce bonus, and a 100k final bucket to reach the Pro target anyway.

Level 4 (Clear 25 red pegs from 93 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 450k)

This design consists entirely of individual pegs - some diamond-shaped, some rectangular, and some round. One of the rows of rectangular pegs is moving left to right.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 430,940
  • Not far off, but I missed an awkward catch at the end off a high purple peg that was in the way of the last three red pegs.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 487,640
  • I struggled for points early on, but a couple of big bonuses in the mid-game put me back in with a chance. I had to hang on to the last couple of balls for quite a while, but I got there.

Level 5 (Clear 25 red pegs from 98 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 475k)

Curves for the bridges in this design, with a variety of single and double pegs scattered around.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 336,270
  • I only had one red peg left, but I couldn't accumulate the points I needed to be able to finish. The high diamond pegs are tricky to catch off and they get in the way.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 412,040
  • Closer that time. I had two red pegs left and went for the slightly tougher catch to leave a good chance of a deflection into the 100k off the other peg. Missed the catch though.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 391,830
  • Same old story. I seemed to get a bit of luck early on, but still ran out of balls before I could finish. I'll have one more go before I resort to a laser ball.

Attempt #4 - No power ups. Score: 360,120
  • Finished before I was ready that time. The last ball ricoched all over the place and took out the last four red pegs. That one ball scored over 250k on its own, but it still left me over 100k short of the target.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball. Score: 501,290
  • Even with the laser ball it was still touch and go towards the end, but I made it despite only getting a 10k final bonus.

Level 6 (Clear 45 red pegs from 100 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 650k)

The same design as level 1, but 20 more red pegs, one less ball and another 225k on the pro target.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 395,340
  • I failed to make a single catch, which was a shame as I was picking up plenty of bonuses for rebounds and distance. The ball just refused to go in the bucket.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 555,080
  • I tried to hang on to the last ball to finish off all the reds, but it would have required a superhuman effort. As it was I picked off about 9 or 10 before I eventually missed a catch. I only had three red pegs left at the end but it could have been a lot worse.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 556,420
  • On a layout like this one it would be reasonable to expect a few reasonable ricochets, but the balls in this go seemed unerringly to find outrageously narrow gaps between pegs and disappear off the bottom having only taken out three or four pegs. I started well enough, finding a route through to the yellow peg with the first ball, then catching a reasonable extra rim bounce with the laser ball. But it all went downhill from there.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 531,660
  • Five red pegs left. I think I'll need to add another power up.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 989,580
  • Well that went very well indeed. I found a route to the yellow peg with the first ball then scored nearly 250k with the laser ball. I took out the green peg with the next ball and then scored a whopping 300k with the Big Bounce. So after 4 balls used I had over 550k scored, only 9 red pegs left out of 14 total and 10 balls remaining, which is one more than I started with. I went on to take an easy total clearance.

Level 7 (Score 600k with 40 red pegs and 71 blue, with only 9 balls - Pro target 800k)

The same design as level 2, but 10 more red pegs, one less ball and 125k on the pro target. I made nearly 750k on level 2 on the third attempt, and that was without boosts. With a laser ball, this shouldn't be too hard.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 878,510
  • I used the same first ball that worked so well on level 2 and that took out 36 pegs and scored just over 300k. It then took me another three balls to get through to the yellow peg, but there was still a cluster in the bottom left that I could aim the laser ball at so I still scored 70k for it. That left me 11 red pegs and 7 balls from which to score just over 300k, but there were plenty of opportunities for bonus so it wasn't too hard to do.

Level 8 (Clear 40 red pegs from 96 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 575k)

The same design as level 3, but 10 more red pegs, one less ball and 50k more on the pro target. This doesn't seem like much of an increase in difficulty and I did it first go last time, so I'll try it without boosts to start with.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 394,020
  • Not the best of efforts. I only made three catches so I still had five or six red pegs left at the end. I can do better than that though.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 363,780
  • Only 2 catches this time so even further away. I'll have one more go without power ups as I do feel this can be done with a little bit of luck.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 551,270
  • I got the extra bit of luck that I was missing on the previous couple of goes, but I pushed it just a little too far. I got down to the last red peg, still 40k or so short, but I took it out hoping to avoid the 10k bucket but didn't and finished about 25k light.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 623,290
  • No problem with score this time, having used a laser ball, but a lack of catches again meant I didn't get through the red pegs. The yellow peg was awkwardly placed though so that didn't help.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball. Score: 345,150
  • I got the yellow peg first time, but the laser seemed to stutter as it launched and it missed the first bounce on the bucket. I think maybe my mouse button stuck slightly. Whatever the cause, it ruined the attempt. I failed to make a single catch and left a lot of red pegs untouched at the end.

Attempt #6 - Laser Ball. Score: 447,600
  • Another one where the yellow peg was awkwardly placed. Plus a familiar lack of catches. I did well to get down to just three reds left and only 130k or so short.

Attempt #7 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 635,740
  • After six failed attempts, I threw another power up at it and that seemed to do the trick. It was still very much touch and go towards the end though. I had to take a couple of chances at the end but they came off.

Level 9 (Clear 45 red pegs from 98 total, with only 8 balls - Pro target 675k)

The same design as level 5, but 20 more red pegs, one less ball and 200k on the pro target. Level 5 required a laser ball to get past so I'm sure this will need at least the same again.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 371,090
  • Not a good effort. It took nearly all of my shots to get through to the yellow peg, and I didn't make anywhere near enough catches to come back from that.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 777,450
  • Much better this time. The yellow peg was front and centre which was useful, and I got a good rim bounce with the laser ball. I still had to make a few catches at the end to make sure of the pro score, and then a 100k final bonus made it all look a bit easier than it actually was.

Level 10 (Clear 50 red pegs from 93 total, with only 8 balls - Pro target 675k)

The same design as level 4, but double the number of red pegs, meaning there are now more red pegs than blue ones. Also one less ball and 225k on the pro target.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 445,290
  • A couple of disastrous early shots which took out one peg than disappeared, coupled with an awkward yellow peg that took too long to get to, plus only three catches, all combined to make this a pretty poor effort. 10 red pegs left at the end.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 427,430
  • Again, the yellow peg was tricky to get to. I need to get a chance with it on top somewhere before I resort to a second power up.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 502,940
  • Yet again, the yellow peg was right down in the bottom left hand corner and it took about 4 or 5 balls to get to it.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 792,870
  • The yellow peg was in the middle, but I did manage to find an angle to take it out with the first ball. As a result, I was much closer. I had more than enough points, and only had two red pegs left at the end. I think I will add another power up though.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 773,110
  • I think the extra boost probably made the difference. The yellow peg was in the moving row, so I could pick it off with the first ball. I got a decent rim bounce with the laser ball, which I also caught (always a bonus). I managed to leave the green peg until about half the pegs had been removed giving the Big Bounce room to move about the screen. All in all a comfortable victory.

Board 94: Dreamers' Neverland

The picture this week shows Peter Pan flying over a jungle with a large triangular mountain in thre background, and a large moon visible behind it.

Level 1 (Clear 25 red pegs from 90 total - Pro target 425k)

This design has two lines of separated rectangular pegs that follow the sloping sides of the mountain, and a lot of individual round pegs, plus a few diamond ones, mainly beneath.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 290,460
  • I was doing OK, but then I lost several balls trying to pick off the last couple of red pegs down the left hand side. I'll put it down to being a bit rusty after a couple of days without playing.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 284,760
  • Still not quite there. The lack of pegs down the sides makes it difficult to pick off side-wall rebounds with any accuracy, and all the pegs being concentrated in the centre makes distance bonuses unlikely. I'll have one more go without power ups, I think.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 537,140
  • I got the hang of the angles a bit better this time. Plus, I got a bit more luck in some better ricochets and a few fortunate catches.

Level 2 (Clear 20 red pegs from 106 total - Pro target 400k)

This design features five circles which probably represent stars, plus a few individual pegs scattered about.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 302,190
  • I rode my luck quite a lot here, but still finished about 100k short of the pro target and with two or three pegs left. The angles here are very tricky. I think I'll have one more go without power ups, but I suspect that I'll need them eventually.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 278,060
  • One red left at the end, but some way short still on points. I'm tempted to try again without power ups, but it would be unlikely to be fruitful. I'll use a laser ball.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 525,670
  • It took way too many balls to break through to the yellow peg as I became fixated on taking it off the side wall. In the end I realised it wasn't going to happen and took it directly, but I'd used up half my balls by then. Despite this, I did just enough with the laser ball, and the other balls that came after it, to secure the required points. I picked up a 100k bonus at the end, but didn't need it.

Level 3 (Clear 30 red pegs from 85 total - Pro target 375k)

This design features diagonal lines for the mountainsides again, but this time they are mainly continuous. There is a break for Peter on on side, and for the cloud on the other. There is also a curve over the top of the moon, and a bunch of individual pegs.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 491,140
  • It's always nice to get a level first time and without power ups. There were plenty of opportunities for side wall bonuses here, and I had a few lucky catches early on. The pro score is quite low and not much of a stretch, so it was more about taking out the 30 red pegs.

Level 4 (Clear 35 red pegs from 84 total - Pro target 450k)

This design has lots of diagonal lines running down the mountain with half a dozen portals at the bottom to take the ball back up to a central target portal about two-thirds of the wayt up.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 488,090
  • Two red pegs left at the end. No problem with the score, but catches are very hard to judge. Those portals fling the ball about all over the show so where it eventually comes down is anyone's guess.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 228,000
  • Nowhere near this time. I only made one catch. I'm going to try it with a laser ball.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 166,320
  • The laser ball didn't work particularly well. There's probably a fantastic shot for it somewhere, but finding it could be a nightmare.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 543,720
  • This is one of those levels which is really hard or really easy depending on what sort of luck you get. I got all the luck this time and made a comfortable total clearance with about five balls to spare.

Level 5 (Clear 25 red pegs from 91 total - Pro target 450k)

This design has more stars, but big ones this time. Three big ones, two small ones, and few individual round pegs right down the bottom.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 376,130
  • It's another tricky bunch of angles. I only had one red peg left at the end, but I might have needed a big final bonus to make the pro target.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 388,150
  • Well, I cleared all the red pegs, but I cleared the last three in one ball, before I was ready, and even a 100k bonus wouldn't have given me a pro score.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 199,450
  • That one never looked likely. I didn't get the catches or the bonuses. Let's try it with a laser ball.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 642,380
  • No problem with the laser ball. I didn't get the rim bounce with the laser ball that I was going for. But it got me more than enough points anyway. After that I could afford to be fairly cavalier with the remaining balls as I only needed to take two reds with a couple of the remaining balls and I had it in the bag.

Level 6 (Clear 45 red pegs from 90 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 650k)

The same design as level 1. I'll probably start all of these last five levels with a laser ball as none of the five designs were easy.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 758,840
  • The yellow peg was quite easy to get to and I did quite well with the laser ball. After that it was just a matter of not wasting too many balls. I ended up with a total clearance for a comfortable pro score.

Level 7 (Clear 35 red pegs from 106 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 675k)

The same design as level 2 but nearly twice as many red pegs to be cleared.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 547,100
  • I didn't get as good a rim bounce off the laser ball as I might have hoped for. All told, I could have done with a touch more luck. I wasn't far off, but it wasn't quite enough.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 833,400
  • I got that little bit of extra luck this time that was missing in the first attempt. I got a much better rim bounce from the laser ball although I didn't quite manage to catch it, which was a shame as it would have been tripled. Still, it didn't matter in the end as I made the pro target without too much difficulty.

Level 8 (Clear 40 red pegs from 91 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 650k)

The same design as level 5, but 14 more red pegs, one less ball and another 200k on the pro target.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 675,830
  • I didn't get a good rim bounce with the laser ball, but I did get a rim bounce so it could have been worse. I just about managed to score enough points to reach the pro target but there wasn't much in it.

Level 9 (Clear ALL pegs - 25 red and 59 blue, with only 9 balls - Pro target 550k)

The same design as level 4, but all pegs are needed. I got a total clearance then with balls to spare, so I just need another one like that.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 309,190
  • The yellow peg was right down the bottom in the middle so getting to it was something of a nightmare. When I did get it, there was precious little left to aim at so points were never looking high enough. But then I had quite a few pegs left at the end so it was all a bit of a disaster.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 177,340
  • The yellow peg was even worse positioned that time. It took nearly all my balls to get to it.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 580,900
  • Just like level 4, this level seems all about luck. I picked off the yellow peg with the first ball and then picked a great angle for the laser ball. It disappeared through several portals as it took out a whole bunch of pegs. I managed to pick off the rest mostly one at a time, genrally trying to avoid the portals.

Level 10 (Clear ALL pegs - 30 red and 55 blue, with only 7 balls - Pro target 600k)

The same design as level 3 which was probably about the easiest of all the designs. However, this is now an all pegs level and only seven balls to work with.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 158,140
  • Oops! I hit the yellow peg with the first ball then completely forgot I had the laser ball with the second shot and utterly wasted it. I ended up not making a single catch and getting only 56% clearance. I really hate doing that.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 407,320
  • Up to 89% that time, but it's tricky with so few balls to work with. I think I'll add a Big Bounce.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 420,030
  • 94% that time, so I'm getting closer. The trampoline didn't work very well for me, although the laser ball was pretty good. If I can get both power ups to work well, then I should get it.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 416,060
  • 94% again which equates to 5 pegs left. Still looking for a bit more luck.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 357,460
  • Only 86% clearance, so not so good.

Attempt #6 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 636,160
  • I had to stretch out the last few balls for quite a long time. I did a lot of shooting straight into the bucket waiting for the purple peg to appear somewhere useful as I needed to maximise the points I was scoring. I tried to leave a couple of low central pegs until last in the hope of getting through them into the 100k bucket but the balls popped up instead of down. I got lucky though and one of them still ended up the 100k anyway.

Board 61: Butterfly Labyrinth

This picture is of a walled maze. A couple of butterflies flutter above it.

Level 1 (Clear 30 red pegs from 92 total - Pro target 500k)

The first design is all horizontal lines and single round pegs. It doesn't look too tricky.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 440,360
  • Not as easy as I thought it might be. Catches, particularly early ones, were quite tricky as all those round pegs get in the way. The reds weren't particularly kindly positioned though, which didn't help. Plus it should get easier as I get used to the angles.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 549,790
  • The reds still weren't ideally placed, but I got some good ricochets going early on which helped clear some pegs and get a few extra points as well.

Level 2 (Clear 35 red pegs from 89 total - Pro target 450k)

More straight lines and single round pegs here. Again, the straight lines look easy enough, if the round pegs don't cause too many problems.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 803,480
  • That did seem very easy. Considerably easier than the previous level. I could have finished much earlier than I did, but I was going for a total clearance while I still had balls in hand. I probably could have got one if I'd needed it as I only had one blue peg left at the end, but I didn't see any point in risking it.

Level 3 (Clear 25 red pegs from 109 total - Pro target 675k)

A circular maze this time, that contains five portals, all leading to a single receiver at the top. Balls could be flying every which way here.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 687,080
  • That was close. I didn't think I was going to be able to squeeze enough points out of that one. Once I got down to my last ball, I tried to take both the last two red pegs in a single sweep, but missed the second of them. However, the ball contrived to bounce around the screen a bit, through a portal or two, and end up hitting the final red anyway, then disappearing into the 50k bucket to put me safely home by about 12k.

Level 4 (Clear 35 red pegs from 124 total - Pro target 450k)

No single pegs in this design, just straight horizontal and vertical lines making up an actual maze. Only having horizontal and vertical surfaces to bounce off should simplify catching a bit.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 173,940
  • Only a 67% clearance, so lots of pegs left at the end, both red and blue. I never seemed to be able to penetrate the centre of the maze. This might need a laser ball, but we'll have another go first.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 579,220
  • A big improvement over the first attempt. It turns out it didn't need a power up after all. I spread the balls about a bit better this time, and got some better ricochets. No doubt I got bit more luck as well, but that's part of the game.

Level 5 (Clear 30 red pegs from 99 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 475k)

This design is of a butterfly and features lots of curves and a few single round pegs.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 431,460
  • I made only two catches, I think, which was pretty woeful. The score was going up OK though, so if I'd just caught a few more balls then I might have been in with a chance.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 640,490
  • I got a bit more luck on this attempt than on my first. I made ten or more catches which was enough to allow me to get through all the red pegs with balls to spare at the end.

Level 6 (Score 450k with 35 red pegs and 57 blue, with only 9 balls - Pro target 700k)

The same design as level 1, but 10 more red pegs, one less ball, and 200k on the pro target. This level has a target score, though, so removing all the reds is not necessarily required.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 544,660
  • I had a go without power ups, but even having got all but two pegs before I ran out of balls, I was still over 150k short.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 844,830
  • I got the yellow peg straightaway so took out a plenty of pegs with the laser ball. It cleared the way for later catches as well.

Level 7 (Clear 40 red pegs from 99 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 700k)

The same design as level 5, but 10 more red pegs and another 225k on the pro target, which is quite a bug increase.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 612,280
  • It took several attempts to break through to the yellow peg and that proved too costly in terms of balls.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 818,630
  • I triggered the laser ball with my second ball, then send the laser along an obvious curve in the design. It meant I couldn't get a catch at the end of it, but I think it was worth it for the extra points. After that, the pegs seemed fairly well positioned for making catches and I stretched the game out to 22 balls, leaving just one blue peg at the end.

Level 8 (Clear ALL pegs - 30 red and 59 blue, with only 9 balls - Pro target 650k)

The same design as level 2, but all pegs need clearing. There are only 89 of them though, so it shouldn't be too bad.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 244,910
  • Not a single catch was made, so the clearance was never going to happen. Just didn't get any luck, that's all. You always need a bit to get through any level.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 544,410
  • I didn't start particularly well, but had an excellent chance to pull it back from the brink, but messed up the last shot completely leaving me with just one peg left at the end. With a bit more care I could have taken the penultimate peg and made a catch of it, then had a decent chance at making the pro target off the last peg.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 558,130
  • Another close one. Four pegs left at the end when I misjudged a catch. I got no luck at the start when I could have done with a fortuitous catch or two.

Attempt #4 - No power ups. Score: 294,640
  • Having come quite close several times, I'm reluctant to resort to the laser ball, but this attempt was nowhere near. Only 90% clearance and not even halfway to the pro target. One more go.

Attempt #5 - No power ups. Score: 360,240
  • 90% again, so no closer than last time, although it felt like a better try. I could be here all day trying this so I'll use the laser ball and get it finished.

Attempt #6 - Laser Ball. Score: 585,390
  • The laser ball certainly increased my score, but the yellow peg was very awkward to get through to. Had it been a bit more accessible I think I could have done that without any problems.

Attempt #7 - Laser Ball. Score: 645,060
  • So very close to a pro score. Despite activating the laser ball with the first ball, then getting a perfect rim bounce with the laser, it didn't seem to score me that many points. After that I was always struggling for points. I had a chance at the end, but I knew I needed a big final bonus and 110k wasn't quite enough.

Attempt #8 - Laser Ball. Score: 454,510
  • Three pegs left at the end. Only 16 shots in total, so not enough catches again.

Attempt #9 - Laser Ball. Score: 814,080
  • Got it at last. There were a few lucky bonuses in there, and a lot of catches seemed to go my way. But then, I guess that's why it took nine attempts, because I was missing the crucial element of luck up to now.

Level 9 (Clear 25 red pegs from 109 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 550k)

The same design as level 3, but with one less ball and a lower pro target. That can't be right can it? Ah! I've just noticed the difference. The teleport portals have changed, in particular the destination portal is no longer at the top, but now right at the bottom. That is going to make an enormous difference to the difficulty. There is also a new portal in the centre of the maze that wasn't there before.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 162,880
  • I hadn't appreciated the key difference between this layout and level 3 before I played it. The rearrangement of the portals makes a massive difference and it's now really quite hard.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 594,210
  • Oh, how irritating. I got this tricky level at only the second attempt but forgot to start the recorder so haven't got a video for it. Maybe at some point in the future when I've finished redoing all the levels, I'll come back and record new videos to fill in the gaps. I took several balls to get through to the yellow peg which was awkwardly placed low down in the centre. I did OK with the laser ball, getting the first bounce but losing the ball through a teleport before making the catch. Then I had to make quite a few catches before taking a chance on the last ball and firing it into the final low cluster of pegs in the hope that it could take out the three remaining red pegs and fall into the 100k bonus. Which it obligingly did.

When I came back to replay it, I got it quite easily at the first attempt. I probably could have got a total clearance if I'd needed one, as I missed just 7 blue pegs and still had four balls in hand. I could get the yellow peg straight away this time, and did well with the laser ball, despite losing it through a teleport. I scored a much bigger 835,540.

Level 10 (Clear ALL pegs - 30 red and 94 blue, with only 9 balls - Pro target 575k)

The same design as level 4, but all 124 pegs need clearing. The pro target seems quite low, so I suspect that won't be a problem, but getting all those pegs might.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 574,190
  • Not a bad effort, considering how long it took to get the yellow peg. A 98% clearance, so theat's only three pegs left I think. With a more convenient yellow peg, that can certainly be improved upon.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 747,440
  • I got the yellow peg with the second ball, then got a decent extra rim bounce with the laser. I still needed the odd lucky catch or two to finish the clearance, but reaching the pro target was never a problem.
