Board 136: Lane Labyrinth

This picture shows some eccentric town planning. There are roads looping around in all directions on impossibly tall viaducts. A number of lampposts in the picture double as signposts and have arrows pointing in all directions.

Level 1 (Clear 30 red pegs from 105 total - Pro target 475k)

The first design features three direction arrows like those on the signpost on the left of the picture.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 419,600
  • I cleared the red pegs, but only by accident. I was struggling for points anyway, and down to my last ball, so a pro score was looking unlikely anyway.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 453,890
  • One red pegs left. I probably took one purple peg too many at the end.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 586,070
  • I was starting to get the hang of the angles a bit better that time. I reached the pro target much more easily, then made sure of the last few red pegs.

Level 2 (Clear 35 red pegs from 103 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 425k)

The second design looks a bit like the window in the central tower. The solid lines of the window are extended outside the main figure with rows of round and diamond-shaped pegs.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 588,900
  • Quite similar to the previous level really. Lots of early ricochets available, and then catches once some of the pegs have been cleared.

Level 3 (Clear 30 red pegs from 95 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 525k)

The third design is two undulating lines, one high and one low. Both are supported on struts.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 813,110
  • This seemed quite an easy level. Most of the curves can be taken out quickly with big slides, and that leaves mostly vertical rectangular pegs which make for easy catches.

Level 4 (Clear 30 red pegs from 121 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 475k)

The fourth design follows the lines of the picture. The lines are mostly curved, following the various paths and roadways, but there are a few straight lines on the buildings anf the lamp post.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 580,380
  • Clearing the red pegs was tougher than reaching the pro target, but I got there in the end.

Level 5 (Clear 25 red pegs from 139 total, with only 8 balls - Pro target 500k)

The fifth design features three roadways that wind around each other. Each roadway consists of two parallel wavy lines with a row of round pegs between them.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 365,060
  • Three red pegs left, and short of points, but I didn't feel that the red pegs were particularly kindly positioned.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 443,330
  • A better score, but a worse clearance. Five red pegs left that time. I'll give it one more go, but I suspect this will need a laser ball to beat it.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 579,760
  • Well, I clearly underestimated myself! I took a few lucky catches this time, and that probably made the difference. It meant I had a few more balls in hand towards the end and that took a lot of the pressure off.

Level 6 (Clear 40 red pegs from 105 total, with only 8 balls - Pro target 625k)

The same design as level 1, but with 10 more red pegs, two less balls and 150k on the pro target.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 468,970
  • Just one red peg left, but I was trying to build to a pro score. I'd already kept the last ball in play for quite a few shots when I finally missed a catch.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 424,750
  • Lots of red pegs left, because I didn't get the catches I needed.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 553,900
  • Just one red peg left with the laser ball, but I didn't quite have enough points to take it.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 630,120
  • I gathered together just about enough points in bonuses that time to get to the pro target. As soon as I was within 10k of the target, I took the last peg, knowing that even the minimum final bucket would be enough.

Level 7 (Clear 40 red pegs from 121 total, with only 8 balls - Pro target 700k)

The same design as level 4, but with 10 more red pegs, one less ball, and 225k on the pro target.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 536,120
  • About 7 red pegs left. It was probably a bit ambitious trying that one without power ups.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 918,010
  • This time, the laser ball gave me my first total clearance of the board.

Level 8 (Clear ALL pegs - 25 red and 78 blue, with only 9 balls - Pro target 625k)

The same design as level 2, but with 10 fewer red pegs, 200k on the pro target, and a total clearance now required.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 455,650
  • A 94% clearance, so not a million miles away. No doubt I'll get better.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 868,840
  • I just about managed to keep the balls going to the end that time. I'd reached the pro target some time ago, so points weren't a problem, although I can't help but go for the purple peg each time - it's too deeply ingrained. It just feels wrong not to! With the last shot, I played for the catch, but knowing there was a good chance of taking out the last peg instead, which is just what happened.

Level 9 (Score 600k with 25 red pegs and 70 blue, with only 7 balls - Pro target 900k)

The same design as level 3, but with 5 fewer red pegs, two fewer balls, 375k on the pro target, and just a score as a target.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 481,590
  • That didn't go anywhere near as well as level 3. Maybe I shoud use a laser ball.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 583,460
  • A better effort, but I twitched on the last ball, and fired it before I was ready. I had a long way to go, though, so it never looked likely.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 885,430
  • Oh what an idiot! I was concentrating so much on the total clearance, I completely forgot that this was a target score level. I took the last red peg with two blue ones left and about five balls in hand. The total clearance would have been a doddle, but I clean forgot I had to leave the red peg until last. Muppet!

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 974,380
  • I thought I'd blown it when I left myself a cluster of four pegs in the bottom centre and only one ball to get them with, but I managed to pick out a tricky catch off one of them and that opened up the others nicely.

Level 10 (Clear ALL pegs - 25 red and 114 blue, with only 8 balls - Pro target 900k)

The same design as level 5, but with 400k on the pro target and a total clearance now needed.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 1,142,510
  • That was one of those games that I could easily have given up on too early. I still had 39 pegs left when I got down to three balls left, 30 pegs left at two balls, and still 18 pegs in play when I got to my last ball. But I kept picking them off one at a time, and kept taking the catches. There were a lot of balls shot straight into the bucket while I waited for the right purple peg, so the game was stretched out to 42 shots, but overall a very satisfying game.
