Board 9: Avalon Keep

This picture shows a huge castle perched on an island that floats in the air. Several other smaller floating islands can be seen in the picture.

Level 1 (Clear 30 red pegs from 113 total - Pro target 450k)

The first design is of a shield with outspread wings. Maybe this is the Avalon Keep coat of arms.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 543,880
  • It was touch and go towards the end as to whether I was going to run out of balls before I either cleared all the reds or accumulated enough points for pro. I managed both though, so that was OK.

Level 2 (Clear 30 red pegs from 105 total, with only 8 balls - Pro target 375k)

The second design seems even more random the the first one. It shows three squares, each containing a cross of single pegs. A dozen smaller squares, each made up of four round pegs, are scattered around the rest of the layout.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 218,510
  • Three red pegs left. Catches are tricky to judge, as there are lots of awkward angles.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 352,110
  • A better score, but lots of red pegs left. I'll use a laser ball.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 673,050
  • The laser ball managed to clear a lot of pegs out of the way and that made life considerably easier. From there I could get a total clearance with a ball or two to spare.

Level 3 (Clear 35 red pegs from 100 total, with only 8 balls - Pro target 425k)

The third design follows the picture. There are a few straight lines over the city itself, otherwise it is all single pegs where the floating islands are.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 250,980
  • Yes, I remember this layout from when I first did it a long time ago. It's a tricky set of angles, and I'll definitely need a laser ball for it.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 516,660
  • I just needed one more catch, but the last ball slid agonisingly off the side of the bucket.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 424,110
  • Three pegs left that time, and I was struggling to get through to them. I'd just cleared a path when I ran out of balls.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 476,910
  • It was a close run thing, and I needed a tricky shot off the side wall to get the final red peg, but I managed it, and I got the pro target.

Level 4 (Clear 40 red pegs from 98 total, with only 8 balls - Pro target 450k)

The fourth design features a diagonal line of three shields, as obstacles. Around each shield is a large circle, and there are grids of round pegs top left and bottom right.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 615,730
  • I was probably a bit lucky to take out the last half dozen or so red pegs in one shot, but that's the way it goes sometimes. There were plenty of good shots in there as well.

Level 5 (Clear 45 red pegs from 101 total, with only 8 balls - Pro target 475k)

The fifth design has a couple of teleports at the bottom of the two smaller islands which lead to a receiver in the top left corner. There are some diagonal lines by the receiver, and a tight arrangement of round pegs beneath them. The right-hand side is much more sparsely populated. There are three balls at the top and a few diamond-shaped pegs acting as funnels into the teleports.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 481,940
  • Three red pegs left, but I had the required points. Worth another try.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 949,790
  • I had a much better run of luck that time. I picked up quite a few lucky catches and fortunate ricochets and it made the difference. I took a total clearance this time.

Level 6 (Score 400k with 30 red pegs and 68 blue, with a 5s shot-clock - Pro target 550k)

The same design as level 4, but with 10 less red pegs, two more balls, 100k on the pro target, a five second shot-clock and just a score to go for.

Attempt #1 - Big Bounce. Score: 321,730
  • About six red pegs left, but quite a long way short of the pro target. Maybe the Big Bounce wasn't such a good idea. I'll try a more traditional laser ball instead.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 541,730
  • I didn't do very well with the laser ball, but I did end up clearing all the red pegs. But I finished just short of the pro target.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 588,800
  • Again, the laser ball was a bit of a waste of time, but I managed to clear the reds again. This time I took the last red knowing I needed a maximum final bonus to make the pro score, but I got away with it.

Level 7 (Clear 25 red pegs from 105 total, with no ball bucket - Pro target 300k)

The same design as level 2, but with 5 less red pegs, two more balls, 75k less on the pro target, and no ball bucket.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 327,570
  • There's no point messing about when there's no ball bucket, so I jumped straight in with both my standard power ups. Luckily I got enough bonuses and ricochets to get rid of all the red pegs. I finished with the laser ball. I knew I still needed quite a few points but felt I had enough balls in hand to accumulate a large enough bonus to get me there, and I was right.

Level 8 (Clear ALL pegs - 35 red and 78 blue, with only 8 balls - Pro target 600k)

The same design as level 1, but with 5 more red pegs, two less balls, 150k on the pro target, and a total clearance now needed.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 747,040
  • Four pegs left, and plenty of points. Not bad for a first attempt. The yellow peg was particularly awkward, right down the bottom of the pattern.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 378,360
  • Only a 70% clearance. The yellow peg was right down the bottom again, and the the laser ball didn't fire cleanly, but there was a delay so it missed the bucket altogether.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 603,430
  • A 90% clearance. I'll try adding a Big Bounce.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 795,120
  • Both power ups worked pretty well. I managed to trigger the Big Bounce quite late on, and it took out most of the pegs that were left.

Level 9 (Score 500k with 25 red pegs and 76 blue - Pro target 600k)

The same design as level 5, but with 20 fewer red pegs, two more balls, 125k on the pro target, and just a score to go for.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 973,830
  • No problems there. I scored 175k with the first ball, then 167k with the second (the laser ball). So after two balls I was down to 10 red pegs (among 39 pegs in total), I had 342k, and I'd gained a ball so I had 11 balls in hand. I took a comfortable total clearance from there but just missed out on the million points.

Level 10 (Clear ALL pegs - 25 red and 75 blue, with only 7 balls and a 5s shot-clock - Pro target 600k)

The same design as level 3, but with 10 fewer red pegs, one less ball, 175k on the pro target, a five second shot-clock, and all pegs now required.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 737,230
  • I remember this one being quite tough, so I went straight in with both my usual power ups. I did it without much fuss in the end. I had to keep the last ball going for a few shots at the end, but once you get the hang of those diamond-shaped pegs, then the catches aren't that difficult.
