Board 6: Moai Titan

This picture shows a huge stone head or moai, such as those found on Easter Island, standing on a hillside of golden yellow. More moai can be seen in the background.

Level 1 (Clear 35 red pegs from 104 total, with only 7 balls - Pro target 750k)

The first design consists of three big spirals, all conveniently pointing towards the launcher, plus a few loose round pegs, mainly in the bottom corners.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 929,650
  • On the surface 7 balls and a 750k pro target seems pretty tough for a level 1, but the spirals are so conveniently placed that you can get to 500k in three balls without really trying. I must remember next time to work right to left as the leftmost spiral knocks a hole in the middle one when played.

Level 2 (Clear 25 red pegs from 104 total - Pro target 375k)

The second design consists of short curves, put together like the outlines of the fluffy white clouds in the picture, and lots of single white pegs scattered about.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 647,160
  • I'm not sure I really deserved this one. I got carried away and played one purple peg too many at the end, leaving myself with just one ball and two red pegs. I played a catch off one of them, got it all wrong, but managed to find the other red peg off the ricochet. A complete fluke, but they all count.

Level 3 (Clear 25 red pegs from 104 total - Pro target 400k)

The third design has a big curve that follows the jawline of the statue, then another parallel, smaller curve inside it, and a circle inside that on the moai's cheek. There are four more small circles on the right hand side, and a scattering of round pegs up that side and along the bottom.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 884,180
  • All very straightforward so far. Again there are two easy sweep shots available at the start. I didn't need many more points after them for the pro target, and I spent most of the remaining balls picking off purple pegs as a finish was guaranteed.

Level 4 (Clear 35 red pegs from 111 total - Pro target 450k)

The fourth design features half a dozen large curves with a few lines of round pegs beside them. There are also three bird -like formations in the sky.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 658,820
  • Not quite as easy as the previous levels, but still not much of a challenge.

Level 5 (Clear 30 red pegs from 113 total - Pro target 350k)

The fifth design has a large curve that follows the full outline of the moai head. On the other side is a large circle, enclosing a smaller one. There are loose round pegs, inside the head, underneath it, and in the circles.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 242,080
  • A bit more tricky, this one. Not a very big pro target, but I was still over 100k short of it. Lots of red pegs left too.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 280,500
  • A slightly better effort, but still a way to go. This may need a power up, but not quite yet.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 468,300
  • A much better effort. I found some good angles to get sweep shots round the curves. I just couldn't get through the remaining loose pegs to get to the remaining red ones.

Attempt #4 - No power ups. Score: 483,230
  • A similar score to before, although I couldn’t match all the big sweeps that I got that time. I suppose I'd better add a laser ball.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball. Score: 767,330
  • Easy enough with a laser ball. I could take my time at the end. I missed a load of catches in the endgame, but still got a comfortable pro score.

Level 6 (Score 325k with 25 red pegs and 79 blue - Pro target 425k)

The same design as level 2, but with 50k on the pro target, and just a score to go for.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 539,710
  • I had this one done quite comfortably with several balls remaining. There was no need to clear the last red peg, so I just kept going for the purple peg until I ran out of balls.

Level 7 (Clear ALL pegs - 30 red and 74 blue, with only 7 balls and a 5s shot-clock - Pro target 950k)

The same design as level 1, but with 5 fewer red pegs, 200k on the pro target, a five second shot-clock, and a total clearance now required.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 1,220,800
  • This one is still easy, even with the shot-clock. The first three balls get the three big curves out of the way (and I made sure I worked right to left this time). Then the remaining balls have lots of space to take catches off the pegs that remain.

Level 8 (Score 400k with 25 red pegs and 86 blue, with a 5s shot-clock - Pro target 500k)

The same design as level 4, but with 10 fewer red pegs, 50k on the pro score, a five second shot-clock, and just a score to go for.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 561,440
  • Again, there was no real need to take the final red as I only needed to score 500k, and I already had that.

Level 9 (Clear ALL pegs - 25 red and 79 blue - Pro target 450k)

The same design as level 3, but with 50k on the pro target and a total clearance now needed.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 863,560
  • I nearly didn't attempt this one without power ups, but I'm glad I did. I ended up clearing all the pegs quite easily. Again, there are two easy sweeps at the start, and then it's just a matter of picking off the remainder.

Level 10 (Clear 55 red pegs from 113 total, with only 7 balls - Pro target 450k)

The same design as level 5, but with 25 more red pegs, three fewer balls, and 100k on the pro target.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 588,870
  • The first ball went badly wrong. It was supposed to leave a nice sweep shot in the circle, but didn't at all. Then I lost too many balls trying to get to the yellow peg.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 682,540
  • I started well enough that time, but it went to pieces a bit at the end.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 823,600
  • That one went much better. I seem to have developed a standard set of opening shots in this layout. The first shot opens up a gap in the top left section of the big circle, then the second shot widens it slightly. The third shot then takes a big sweep round the inside of the remainder of the circle. After that I try and pick off the pegs on top of the statue to enable another big sweep down the statue's left hand side. I didn't end up taking the yellow peg until quite late on, but it still proved useful.
