Board 27: Gardens of Babel

This picture is of an ancient city in a classical style. In the foreground is a sort of garden area on multiple ornate stone levels. In the distance, across a wide river, are more stone buildings and a huge stone tower going high into the sky.

Level 1 (Clear 25 red pegs from 99 total - Pro target 300k)

The first design is a pattern of circles, short diagonal lines and single round pegs, all arranged in horizontal stripes.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 466,990
  • An easy enough starter. I got a comfortable pro score with several balls to spare.

Level 2 (Clear 25 red pegs from 108 total - Pro target 400k)

The second design follows the lines of the picture - staggered rectangular pegs up the sides of the tower in the distance, straight lines level with the river bank, on the columns in the foreground, and up the sides of the steps, and round pegs at various places in between them all.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 379,930
  • Catches seem quite tough on this layout. I battled through to just one red peg left but I was tempted by a purple peg at the end and missed the catch.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 412,440
  • I had three red pegs left that time, but I couldn't work out how to get a reliable catch of any of them with my last ball. I tried to clear some blues out of the way, but missed the catch there.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 350,410
  • One red peg left that time, but I mistimed the laser ball and caught the rim bounce all wrong so it just went back on itself.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 866,860
  • I could get the yellow peg with the first ball, and then I got the timing much better on the laser ball. It made for a considerably easier game and a comfortable pro score. It would have been a comfortable clearance, but I took out the last red peg by mistake with a couple of blue pegs left. I had several balls in hand though.

Level 3 (Clear 25 red pegs from 120 total - Pro target 375k)

The third design features a symmetrical pattern of round pegs and clusters of diamond-shaped pegs arranged into little starbursts.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 356,120
  • I couldn't clear the reds, despite riding my luck quite a bit, so I'll add a laser ball.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 777,580
  • I could get the yellow with ball one, so that helped a lot. I took out plenty of pegs with the laser ball. It could have scored more points, but the pro target is very low here anyway, so it scored enough. After that I had few enough red pegs left to be able to play the purple pegs until all the red pegs had gone due to unexpected ricochets.

Level 4 (Clear 25 red pegs from 118 total - Pro target 400k)

The fourth design is of three archways, like those on the upper tier of the garden in the picture.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 162,350
  • It's very difficult to judge catches on this layout, and bonuses are hard to come by. I'll need a laser ball, I think.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 679,270
  • Again, with the yellow peg easily accessible at the start, I got a nice early laser ball. After that I had to keep half an eye on the number of red pegs I had left and how accessible they were compared to my balls in hand, but then a good ricochet took out three of my remaining four red pegs, leaving one that was in plain sight, so then I could relax.

Level 5 (Clear 25 red pegs from 91 total - Pro target 375k)

The fifth and final design features 49 pegs squashed between two stepped walls, much like the walls of the tower, with a small gap at the top. Twenty or so round pegs are each side of the central tower, much more widely spaced out. There are four teleport portals, two each side, which all transport to a receiver at the top of the tower.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 333,450
  • Not bad for a first attempt. I only had a couple of red pegs left (and not many blue either), and I was closing in on the pro target. Definitely worth another go.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 580,040
  • I got a good early ricochet that time, which took out most of the red pegs inside the ziggurat, and with a double score as well, so the pro target was effectively taken care of. I still needed most of the balls I had left, mind you, to finish off the reds that remained.

Level 6 (Clear 35 red pegs from 120 total, with a 5s shot-clock - Pro target 650k)

The same design as level 3, but with 10 more red pegs, 275k on the pro target, and a five second shot-clock.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 545,060
  • I only had one red peg left at the end, but I needed a few more points before I could finish. I should have done it, but I misjudged a relatively easy catch off a purple peg.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 240,040
  • The yellow peg was tucked away right at the bottom, and it took most of my balls to break through to it. I had no chance after that.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 660,810
  • I could take out the yellow peg with the first ball, and then get a good laser ball. Thereafter I went for some bonuses, while keeping an eye on how many red pegs I had left and the number of balls I had to get them with.

Level 7 (Clear 45 red pegs from 91 total - Pro target 625k)

The same design as level 5, but with 20 more red pegs and 250k on the pro target.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 850,830
  • Once you get the hang of the angles of this layout, it's actually quite easy. I used high red pegs on either side to bounce the ball across to the opposite side for distance bonuses, and the chances are that one will find its way into the ziggurat, which will inevitably take out most of the pegs inside. Any pegs left along the inside edges can be taken out using the lower portals, taken off the wall first.

Level 8 (Score 400k with 40 red pegs and 59 blue - Pro target 625k)

The same design as level 1, but with 15 more red pegs, 325k on the pro target, but just a score now to go for.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 383,510
  • I thought it was worth a go without power ups first, but I didn't get particularly close. I'll add a laser ball.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 1,029,170
  • I added a laser ball and that made it much easier. There were lots of bonuses available, and I ended up taking a total clearance for a seven figure score, although I was helped by a maximum final bucket bonus.

Level 9 (Clear ALL pegs - 25 red and 83 blue - Pro target 675k)

The same design as level 2, but with 275k on the pro target and all pegs now needed.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 976,500
  • I got the yellow peg straightaway, and the laser ball got an interesting double rim bounce across the bottom of the screen that I can't remember getting before. Or maybe I only noticed it this time because there were lots of pegs down there for it to take out. There were still lots of catches to be made after that, but I'm good at that.

Level 10 (Clear ALL pegs - 35 red and 83 blue, with a 5s shot-clock - Pro target 650k)

The same design as level 4, but with 250k on the pro target, a five second shot-clock, and a total clearance now required.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 659,900
  • Rather stupidly, I forgot it was an All Pegs level, and cleared the final red peg to reach the pro target with my final ball and have a moment of puzzlement when the final buckets didn't appear. I have one more credit at present, so I'll add a Big Bounce in an effort to get it before I run out.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 760,610
  • I managed to leave the green peg until quite late on, and when I took it and activated the Big Bounce, it was particularly effective. I managed to accumulate enough points for a pro score before I took out the final peg, so I could play it directly with my last ball and not take any chances.
