Board 116: Mountain's Majesty

This picture is of an eagle soaring high above a forest. Snow covered mountains tower in the distance. Dark clouds cover the sky, but the sun shines through in one place, illuminating the eagle in a cone of light.

Level 1 (Clear 30 red pegs from 93 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 500k)

The first design is of a feather flanked by pairs of flat rectangular pegs, loose round ones, and loose diamond-shaped ones.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 798,910
  • An easy enough start. There were plenty of opportunities for bonuses, although I probably got quite lucky in the way the red pegs lay. There always seemed to be a red peg nicely available off the side wall, and another red peg a distance away to play towards for an extra distance bonus. I had balls in hand at the end and might well have gone on to get a total clearance if a ricochet hadn't taken out the final red peg.

Level 2 (Clear 30 red pegs from 97 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 500k)

The second design follows the lines of the picture, including the body and wings of the eagle, the loose feathers, and the tops of the mountains.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 527,440
  • This one wasn't too tricky either. There seemed to be plenty of bonus opportunities, and later on the catches became easier to judge. I forgot to start the recorder until I'd already launched the first ball, so the video only comes in part way into the first ball.

Level 3 (Clear 35 red pegs from 106 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 450k)

The third design is an arrangment of what appear to be claws or perhaps wingtips. There is a line of blue pegs above them and another below.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 367,500
  • Two red pegs left, but both were awkwardly placed and I had no real idea as to how to get to them. I didn't get much luck by way of early catches though, so it's certainly worth another try.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 264,690
  • Up to 18 shots, but only a 75% clearance and still five red pegs left at the end. A long way short of the pro score as well.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 243,860
  • Getting worse. Only 15 shots, and still 9 red pegs left at the end. I'd better use the laser ball.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 605,140
  • No problem getting the pro target using a laser ball, but I still couldn't quite clear all the red pegs; I ended with one left.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball. Score: 713,750
  • An even bigger score, but two red pegs left this time.

Attempt #6 - Laser Ball. Score: 500,940
  • Three pegs left that time, so I'm still getting further away. I guess I'd better add a second power up.

Attempt #7 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 1,130,580
  • That was much more straightforward. I'm not sure whether it was the Big Bounce that made the difference, or whether I just got luckier. Perhaps it was a bit of both. Either way, I had plenty of balls in reserve all the way through and made a total clearance.

Level 4 (Clear 35 red pegs from 89 total, with only 8 balls - Pro target 425k)

The fourth design is a combination of straight lines representing the beams opf light coming down from the break in the clouds, and single round pegs.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 306,250
  • Not particularly close to a clearance, and the score wasn't particularly promising either.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 1,039,670
  • A laser added, and it all seems suddenly very easy. Not quite a total clearance, but I had balls in hand and only one blue peg left when I took the final red peg out with an unexpected ricochet, so it may as well have been.

Level 5 (Clear 35 red pegs from 86 total, with only 8 balls - Pro target 600k)

The final design is of an eagles head with lots of elegant curves.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 342,270
  • I misjudged quite a few shots that I should have caught. I should be able to improve on that if I can learn from my mistakes.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 653,370
  • I managed to avoid most of the mistakes I made last time. Not quite all of them, but enough. It was touch and go towards the end whether I'd be able to clear all the red pegs before running out of balls, but some well-judged catches did the trick.

Level 6 (Clear 40 red pegs from 97 total, with only 7 balls - Pro target 800k)

The same design as level 2, but with 10 more red pegs, two less balls, and 300k on the pro target.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 529,220
  • Not a bad first attempt. Only six pegs left in total, but five of them were red. The score was a little low mind you.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 635,420
  • Well, I cleared all the red pegs that time, but I was still 165k short of the pro target. I'll try adding a Big Bounce.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 473,740
  • I didn't seem to do very well with either power up, and I missed a lot of catches so I got nowhere near it.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 849,390
  • Well that one looked like a disaster at the start. I couldn't get to the yellow peg. I got to the green peg first, and the Big Bounce took out quite a few pegs but didn't score much. By the time I'd activated the laser ball, I was down to four balls, had cleared 65% of the pegs and had only scored just under 150k. I managed to find a good path for it, though, that got two high scoring rim bounces and removed half the remaining pegs for over 300k. I still needed 350k off the 17 pegs that were left, and still with four balls, but some good catching and a total clearance got me there.

Level 7 (Clear ALL pegs - 30 red and 63 blue, with only 8 balls - Pro target 650k)

The same design as level 1, but with one less ball, 150k on the pro score and a total clearance now required.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 258,470
  • Probably a bit ambitious attempting this without power ups, but I did pretty well at level 1 so I thought it was worth a try. I'll add a laser ball.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 344,550
  • The laser ball went disastrously wrong. I tried to go the other way with it, but mistimed it completely. I managed to extend the endgame for quite a long time with some well worked out catches, but blew it in the end with a carless shot straight into the bucket.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 492,850
  • A 94% clearance. I took a standard route with the laser ball, but as I expected, it didn't score much.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 334,130
  • Another dreadfully judged laser ball. I never had a chance after that. Just a 75% clearance.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball. Score: 795,250
  • I did much better with the laser ball that time. I got to the yellow on my second shot, but I caught them both anyway, so that didn't matter. I then scored about 300k or so with the laser ball. I needed some more good catching throughout the rest of the game, but I got there.

Level 8 (Score 600k with 25 red pegs and 61 blue, with only 7 balls - Pro target 800k)

The same design as level 5, but with 10 less red pegs, one less ball, 200k on the pro target, but just a score to aim at.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 502,580
  • Not a bad effort, but trying it with no power ups is probably a step too far.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 667,480
  • Got the badge that time, but not the pro score. I picked off the outer two curves first, deliberately taking the one with the yellow peg in second. Then I got two scoring rim bounces with the laser ball, so I couldn't ask for any more than that. But then a disastrous series of missed catches ruined me.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 359,760
  • The yellow peg was buried in the middle of the eagle so it was a nightmare to get to.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 951,110
  • The yellow peg was nicely on top, although I still picked off the two outer curves first. I went for a laser ball that arced over the top, taking most of the upper pegs out, which seemed to work OK. Then it was just a matter of trying the judge the catches accurately, and picking up bonuses where I could. I missed the total clearance by one peg, but taking the last red when I did seemed to make the most sense.

Level 9 (Clear ALL pegs - 30 red and 76 blue, with only 8 balls - Pro target 650k)

The same design as level 3, but with 5 less red pegs, one less ball, 200k on the pro target, and a total clearance now required.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 781,380
  • The laser ball worked pretty well, and so did the Big Bounce. I had plenty of work still to do after they'd both been played, but most of the catches I made were played for. I wasted a couple of balls near the end trying to play a peg off the side wall and missing entirely, which could have been costly, but I survived.

Level 10 (Clear ALL pegs - 25 red and 64 blue, with only 8 balls - Pro target 725k)

The same design as level 4, but with 10 less red pegs, 300k on the pro target, and all pegs now needed.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 583,950
  • A 94% clearance, so not too far off. There were quite a few missed catches that shouldn't have been, though, so there's room for improvement.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 602,850
  • Up to 97% clearance that time, so an improvement.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 795,020
  • A little but of extra luck was all that was required. And perhaps a slightly better knowledge of the angles involved.
