Board 40: Beacon Harbor

This picture shows a lighthouse shining its beam out into the night. In the foreground there lamplit wooden pier with a couple of birds perched on the supports.

Level 1 (Clear 25 red pegs from 95 total - Pro target 450k)

The first design has solid lines around the outside of the lighthouse, and lining its beam, plus single round pegs over the sea and in the beam of light.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 375,740
  • I found bonuses a little hard to come by and the catches I attempted didn't seem to come off. Hopefully the next go will be better.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 623,630
  • I wasn't making any catches at the start, and not scoring many points either, so I decided I was going to go for the purple peg for a few goes, wherever it was, and just see what happened. It was a strange tactic, but it seemed to work. I picked up a few bonuses that way, made a few catches, and before I knew it, I was back in with a chance. I then got myself past the pro target, and kept going for the purple peg while I had balls in hand, but as soon as I went down to my last ball, I finished it.

Level 2 (Clear 25 red pegs from 89 total - Pro target 525k)

The second design also follows the lines in the picture, but this time it uses the pier and the horizon, with a scattering of single round pegs everywhere else.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 552,490
  • That was fairly straightforward. There are only 89 pegs in this design so there are not too many blue pegs to get in the way. I managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over as I cleared the reds. I was a little short of points at the very end, but I had a good purple peg to work from. I thought, if I play purple to red for a distance bonus, and position the bucket for a catch should I miss, then I ought to be covering all the bases. I got the red for a 50k distance bonus and it was enough.

Level 3 (Clear 25 red pegs from 95 total - Pro target 550k)

The third design is of two lighthouses seen from above. There are two concentric circles (or parts thereof) around each. Each lighthouse has a beam of light rotating around the inner circle which acts as an obstacle.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 260,590
  • An almost complete lack of catches put paid to that effort. I don't like this layout, so I'm going to add a laser ball in an effort to get past it quickly.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 431,440
  • Just one red peg left, but still a little low on points. I like this layout less every time I play it, so I'll add a Big Bounce as well.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 623,720
  • I probably didn't need the Big Bounce, as it really didn't add much. I found some good angles that gave me some good sweep shots around the circles. It was still touch and go at the end, though. I needed two red pegs with the last ball, so I had to make a catch off the first.

Level 4 (Clear 25 red pegs from 90 total - Pro target 550k)

The fourth design has beams of alternating round pegs and diamond-shaped ones emanating out from the lighthouse in all directions.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 359,260
  • I made a few catches, but not enough, particularly in the early part of the game. I only had one red peg left, but I was still 200k short of the pro target.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 387,940
  • Again, I got down to the last red peg, but I was too far short of the pro target to be able to finish. While I was trying to take catches off purple pegs, I missed one.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 658,580
  • The laser ball didn't seem to work particularly well, and I still had a lot of work to do afterwards. I had to push all the way to a total clearance in order to give myself a chance at a pro score.

Level 5 (Clear 25 red pegs from 93 total - Pro target 600k)

The final design copies the old-fashioned lamp posts along the pier.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 622,410
  • I found the angles on this one quite forgiving and catches were fairly easy to take. I was down to my last ball at the end, so as soon as I hit the pro target, I finished it.

Level 6 (Score 400k with 25 red pegs and 70 blue - Pro target 725k)

The same design as level 3, but with 175k on the pro target and only a score for a target.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 377,170
  • I still don't like this layout. I'll add a Big Bounce to try and get past it.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 630,430
  • A better effort, but still nearly 100k short of the pro target. I got a good sweep with the first ball so I shall have to try and repeat that next time.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 564,830
  • I tried to get the same opening shot, but it didn't work. The yellow peg was awkward to get to and that put me behind and I never really recovered.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 471,980
  • Neither power up worked particularly well, so I never really had a chance.

Attempt #5 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 397,050
  • I find the angles on this level incredibly hard to predict. It's probably one of my least favourite levels to date.

Attempt #6 - Laser Ball & Big Bounce. Score: 950,010
  • I needed a bit of luck and I finally got it. I picked up lots of sweeping bonuses. The two power ups didn't take out many pegs, but the Big Bounce got a x2 score bonus so that made up for it. In the end I had more than enough balls to take a total clearance, but the final red went off a ricochet so I only got a 97% clearance. A pretty good score though.

Level 7 (Clear 35 red pegs from 90 total - Pro target 750k)

The same design as level 4, but with 10 more red pegs, and 200k on the pro target.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 735,860
  • Not bad for a first effort. I managed a total clearance, but couldn't quite accrue enough points for a pro score.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 524,080
  • Too many missed catches. I took a few in the endgame but it wasn't enough. The laser ball worked OK though.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 813,390
  • I did a lot better on ricochets this turn, and I seemed to manage quite a few catches. The bonuses came fairly thick and fast.

Level 8 (Clear ALL pegs - 25 red and 70 blue - Pro target 750k)

The same design as level 1, but with 300k on the pro target, and a total clearance now required.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 746,930
  • I thought I had that one, but unfortunately I was undone by a minimum 20k final bonus. I thought I had an angle to deflect straight into the 100k bucket, but it wasn't quite there.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 917,120
  • No problem that time. I got the yellow peg straight away. Then I used a path with the laser ball that I found on the previous attempt. It takes out pretty much the entire lighthouse, plus most of the bottom bar of the light beam, and some of the single pegs at the bottom. After that I just made lots of catches, sometimes waiting for the purple peg to appear somewhere useful.

Level 9 (Clear ALL pegs - 35 red and 54 blue, with only 9 balls - Pro target 800k)

The same design as level 2, but with 10 more red pegs, one less ball, 275k on the pro target, and a total clearance now required.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 754,380
  • I cleared all the pegs, but I needed a big final bonus and 60k wasn't enough.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 727,920
  • Three pegs left at the end. I had to take some extra chances to make the extra points and it was clearly a few chances too many.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 307,510
  • The yellow peg was awkwardly placed. It took me about three balls to get it which didn't score me many points. After that I was always behind, and catches I was playing weren't working either.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 801,240
  • Again, I needed more than the minimum 20k from the final buckets, only this time I got it. I only got 60k, but it was enough to see me scrape over the finish line. The first ball managed to find its way somehow to the yellow peg, and I managed to score well with a standard laser ball. After that it was all careful catching and tactical ricochets.

Level 10 (Clear 45 red pegs from 93 total, with only 9 balls - Pro target 825k)

The same design as level 5, but with 20 more red pegs, one less ball, and 225k on the pro target.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 830,740
  • Another one where I just scraped over the line with a 60k final bucket bonus. Red pegs were the target, but I needed a total clearance to get a pro score. I needed to make plenty of catches and lots of bonuses to get there.
