Board 36: Laguna Heights

This picture shows a settlement built on the side of a rocky hill that slopes down to a river. The dwellings appear to be made out of mud bricks as they are the same colour as the rocky ground. The river drops down a couple of waterfalls as it flows from background to foreground where a donkey drinks from it, and a chicken and a couple of chicks stand nearby.

Level 1 (Clear 25 red pegs from 100 total - Pro target 400k)

The first design has a few short lines that follow the backs of the donkey and chicken in the picture, a few single curved pegs on the rounded corners of the buildings on the right-hand side, and lots of single round pegs.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 353,670
  • No luck at all that time. Catches aren't particularly easy to set up, but I only took a single one which wasn't anywhere near enough.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 221,730
  • No luck there either. I took three catches, but bonuses were just as hard to come by as catches. I'll use a laser ball.

Attempt #3 - Laser Ball. Score: 569,590
  • Even after the laser ball, I still seemed to have quite a few red pegs left. I managed it easily enough, mind. I had a couple of spare balls at the end which I used up on the purple pegs before I went for the finish.

Level 2 (Clear 25 red pegs from 105 total - Pro target 425k)

The second design is modelled on one of the mud brick houses with their curved corners and simple windows.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 313,630
  • Again, not enough catches as I still had about 5 red pegs left at the end.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 489,790
  • I extended the game to 21 balls this time, so I clearly had plenty of catches. I also picked up quite a few bonuses as I went as well.

Level 3 (Clear 25 red pegs from 112 total - Pro target 475k)

The third design is a circle with four sets of four parallel lines sticking out from it in the four cardinal directions of the compass. There are also six clusters of single round pegs, three on each side.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 299,130
  • A particularly clumsy attempt. Not enough catches made, but I can't put it down to bad luck as the misses were probably mostly my own fault.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 445,310
  • I probably should have had that one. I made the mistake of playing out my spare balls at the end when I didn't have a clear shot at the last red peg.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 293,070
  • Not as close that time. I'd better use a laser ball.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 922,790
  • It took a few shots to get through to the yellow peg, but I got a particularly good laser ball with a double rim bounce. This took me over the pro target all on its own, so I could concentrate all my remaining balls on the clearing what was left. I had plenty of balls in hand at this point so I went for (and got) the total clearance.

Level 4 (Clear 25 red pegs from 100 total - Pro target 475k)

The fourth design is of two ladders leaning away from each other, a few single round pegs , and half a dozen flat pegs in a row, moving slowly from left to right in a continuous line.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 705,980
  • The ladders themselves are actually quite easy to get rid of. You just pop a ball in at the top and let it drop all the way through. After that there were plenty of opportunities to take pegs off the side wall. I made an easy total clearance with several balls to spare.

Level 5 (Clear 25 red pegs from 99 total - Pro target 500k)

The final design is a pattern of small squares, all tilted at 45°, plus a handful of loose pegs, mainly diamond-shaped.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 601,040
  • Ricochets were quite easy at the start, and indeed for most of the game as those 45° angles seem to naturally throw the ball from side to side. I was struggling for points a little at the end, and I had to play a few purple pegs with my last ball before I was confident enough to take out the last red peg. As it happened I finished in the 100k bucket, so I needn't have worried.

Level 6 (Clear 35 red pegs from 100 total - Pro target 575k)

The same design as level 1, but with 10 more red pegs, and 175k on the pro target.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 469,890
  • This was quite a tricky design first time round, and it's no easier this time. I didn't take enough catches and I still had quite a few red pegs left at the end.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 814,480
  • I got pretty lucky with catches this time. I took a lot of catches early on and did well with the laser ball. As a result I always had lots of balls in hand and could afford to be adventurous with my shots. I didn't get a total clearance, but only because the last four reds all went unexpectedly in the same shot. I finished with one blue peg left and four balls in hand, so the total clearance would have been automatic otherwise.

Level 7 (Clear 35 red pegs from 105 total - Pro target 675k)

The same design as level 2, but with 10 more red pegs, and 250k on the pro target.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 756,670
  • I got the yellow peg with the first shot, then got a good rim bounce with the laser ball. I got the measure of the angles early on and made a lot of complex catches. It wasn't easy to get all the way to the pro target, but I made it.

Level 8 (Clear 40 red pegs from 112 total - Pro target 675k)

The same design as level 3, but with 15 more red pegs, and 200k on the pro target.

Attempt #1 - Laser Ball. Score: 828,980
  • I had to take out most of the pegs on the right-hand side to get to the yellow peg, so I concentrated the laser ball on the other side, and did pretty well from it. I could play catches off most of the red pegs that were left, and I had a comfortable victory in the end.

Level 9 (Clear 40 red pegs from 99 total - Pro target 700k)

The same design as level 5, but with 15 more red pegs, and 200k on the pro target.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 457,640
  • Quite a long way short of either the red peg clearance or the pro target, but I fancy giving this one another go before I add a laser ball.

Attempt #2 - No power ups. Score: 577,480
  • That felt a lot closer. In fact, I probably should have had it; I just made a bad shot selection at the very end.

Attempt #3 - No power ups. Score: 390,400
  • Not very close that time. I would have had to keep going on my last ball for about 30 pegs or more. I did maybe a dozen, but I had a long way to go. Reluctantly, I'll add a laser ball.

Attempt #4 - Laser Ball. Score: 995,130
  • The yellow peg went at the cost of quite a few balls on the left-hand side, so I reflected my normal laser ball shot, as there were conveniently placed pegs against the side walls to help me. It was a pretty good effort, although the rim bounce could have been better. I'm getting the hang of these angles now so I found the endgame quite easy despite having to make quite a few catches.

Level 10 (Clear ALL pegs - 35 red and 65 blue, with a 3s shot-clock - Pro target 750k)

The same design as level 4, but with 10 more res pegs, 275k on the pro target, a short 3 second shot-clock, and all pegs are now required.

Attempt #1 - No power ups. Score: 489,450
  • Only an 85% clearance. It seemed quite easy the first time around, but the shot-clock is quite hard. I'll use a laser ball.

Attempt #2 - Laser Ball. Score: 895,240
  • The yellow peg was in one of the lower rungs of the right-hand ladder, but they're quite easy to hit, so I got it on my first ball. I did quite well with the laser ball, then I picked off what was left mostly one at a time.
